Laptop 3D Graphics Accelerator

Hi,

I've got a spinky (ok, getting on a bit) laptop, celery 1ghz, 370something mbs of ram etc. Games run a bit poop on it due to the crappy savage 3d something or other card in it. I was remembering back to the days when 3d cards acted as a sideline to the main vga adapter, and wondered if there was this sorta setup available for laptops, like a PCMCIA 3d accelerator.

I've had a look around can't seem to find anything, but has anyone heard of/seen this sort of thing?

Cheers

Nrarrhgh. I'll stick to playing THPS2 (at shit frame rates) and total annihilation, then :|

While I have a thread open then, I'll ask another quick quessie. The Geffer TI 4800.. I presume that's one up from the 4600?

Reason being, I was all set to get the Radeon 9500 pro, which was surpassed by ti4600 alone in tests, but the 4800 seems to be 40 quid cheaper.. perhaps it's worthwhile getting that instead?

Tar!

iirc a ti 4800 is just a ti 4200 qith AGp 8x support and maybe a few other bits

Whelp, had a look at benchmarks, out performs the 4600 etc, so it seems like it is the top 4xxx range. It also pretty decently outperforms the 9500 pro on everything (by about 5-10 fps) and is 2 quid cheaper. HOWEVER the 9500 pro shits on the 4800 for 3dmark 2003. This is because of dx9 support. Hence dilemma, buy this card to make current games run much better, or buy the 9500 to make future games run ok (they're not gunna run great tbh). ARGH

Dead man is almost right. It's a Ti4600 with 8x AGP, not a 4200. I'm not sure if there is a special name for 8x 4200s or not... I have a feeling that they are still sold under the name 4200.

Actually, both people are right : 4800's : some are 8x 4200,s some are 8x 4600 : hands together for the lovely naming conventions nVidia use.

Fuck knows which are which tho :|

actually kryt that's wrong

NVIDIA defined Ti4800 as a 4600 with AGP8x and a Ti4800SE as a Ti4400SE with 8x - it's only certain unscrupulous partners of theirs who have tried to re-brand their 8x 4200's :)

there isn't yet, but when 3GIO finally replaces PCMCIA you'll see the laptops video moving to a removable card which can be replaced by new units bought off the shelves of your local hardware emporium :) that obviously doesn't help your current laptop which could never use one of these cards - but it is at least in the pipeline

Nrrargh!

Thanks for the info though.

Main reason I asked is we just got delivered (to work) two P4 2.4ghz laptops, 1gb of ram, 15" screen, dvd/cd-rw combo, and a gf 4 go (or whatever they're calling it now.

I think the people they're going to are going to use it for Word. Oh the pain :/

if yours is smaller, thinner or lighter, offer them it as a functional swap ;) after all you won't mind the bulk on the basis of the additional horsepower which you need for the kind of things you do ;) (decoding high res pr0n)
