LAN for A7V8X

how would I go about networking 2 A7V8X motherboards from asus with gigabyte lan chips onboard and an rj-45 port...

what hardware would I need.. specfice cable type, hub needed?

If it's just 2 then you just need some crossover cable that will reach between the two PC's. That's the cheapest solution.

If you plan on adding more PC's or maybe you have or plan to get broadband in the near future, get a combined adsl router. My one is a Conexant 4 port from the DabsValue range. It's great and I've had no probs with it. The switch inside is 4 port 10/100 full duplex.

Otherwise depending on what you want to transfer between PC's (ie is it just for games and the occasional file transfer or will you having a shit load of traffic on it most of the time?) you can get anything from a cheap 10 speed hub to a 10/100 switch.
