I have 2 comps sharing one broadband connection on a pretty good switch. One is a p4 2.0 ghz 512 ddr and radeon 9700 pro 128 mb. the other is a p4 3.0 ghz 512 ddr a 128 mb nvidia card .. problem is that i keep getting really bad lag spikes on my p4 2.0 ghz machine ... i have formated it and have changed the compatibilty mode to windows nt ( i use windows xp ) and still no difference .. the problem has to be the machine because i get no lag on my other comp which is on the same connection. The problem appeared b4 ToA came out and it used to run fine and then all of a sudden i cant get rid of it. Any ideas what it it is .. must be a hardware prob of some sorts but i dont have any problems with any other games or programs on that comp.

to me it seems as the problem is the graphics card not being so "powerful" nowadays esp with toa

u upgraded directx drivers and all that?

and made free memory by removing unnecessary tasks?

also try playing with the toa settings themselvEs

it should run fine on the gfx card and all the drivers are up to date .. its like the machine stutters every couple of minutes and i get 2 red bubbles .. its enough for me to lose stick in emain etc .. so its really annoying .. toa isnt the problem afaik because i had it b4 toa

you tried defragging?

it sounds like some process eating 100% of cpu power

i had to do a repair once on a comp with a similar problem and stuff like motherboard temperature monitor slowed the comp down every time it checked readings

also:

tell me this, when the pauses come, does the HDD led stay on?

I have defragged, reformated, got rid of all non essential programs, closed all applications when i am in daoc etc .. and the led stays on.. the strange thing is that there are some days when the lag disappears.

Are you sure that your HDD's are running in UDMA mode? (Preferable, UDMA5 or so.. think it's the highest).

Also, what is your current DAoC Cache setting?

hmm, it could be caused by slow HDD, or even drivers, some of the older drivers work better then new ones for DAoC, i tried new ones at some point, and they were terrible for it :(

lol i had a similar problem..

the end problem was some wire that kept moving inside the case and that caused the HDD to freeze and the led to stay on

Check two things:
1st : Temperature of your graphic card, cpu and chipset (might be cooler is stucked or dusted and when card warms up lil bit too much, it simply decreases it's frequency (both Intel and nVidia chips are capable of it). When it cools down, it returns to fast frequency).
2nd : Check your switch following way: Swap ports in which are your 2 computers plugged (ie. take cable 1 and plug it into port 2 and vice versa). If your switch is really as good, there should not be any change. If there is change, your switch has some manufacturing defect :/
