Im gonna be picking up some new kit soon. Gonne get myself a Dual P3 1GHz, 512MB and Either a Geforce 3 or a Kyro 2.

Ive read good reviews of the Kyro 2 and its SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than the GeForce3.

Any opinions?

I've read a lot that dual processors don't help gameplay much. You need to run Win 2000 (no bad thing - I do) but no games are built to use multiple threads and therefore two processors will not give you faster gameplay.

I'm not an expert but do read up on it before you fork out the cash.

Drop the duel cpu, buy an AMD cpu, then with the extra money get a GF3.

and plus, any speed you gain from getting a dual proessor, you'll easily lose by moving to Win2000, it so damm ssssslllllooooooooowwww

Who said i was buying 2 CPUs for gaming? :)
Gaming have absolutely no baring on wether i buy 1 or 2 CPUs. What DOES have an inpact however, is what GFX card i buy, which is what this thread is about :)

I recall Kryten getting his Kyro 2 and being disappointed by Herc's support or something. Which left him slightly pissed off.

Assuming you're going for something cpu-overhead heavy (graphics rendering etc, would be a good use of the duel cpus) I'd say stick with nvidia, its a tried and tested company with good overall support, and while kyro might end up being a 'player' so to speak, I'd steer clear and let them find their feet with drivers and support before going the mile with them.

You could just pick up a GF2u which is about the same level as the kyro in rendering 'oomph' - and cheaper than the gf3.

Two cents.

etc.

If u've got the money to waste, get the GF3 (get the Elsa version). However, I think that is a waste of money. But that's ur choice. If u were to wait a month or two, u could see other NVidia cards come down in price!

Processor wise.... definitely the AMD Athlon. Try to get DDR RAM too for the ultimate machine! The P4, to put it bluntly, just sucks!

DDR is too young imo, i wouldnt buy a DDR mobo for at least a year or so so they can imporve stability.

Errrrrrr...... no reports on instability so far..... DDR has been around for quite some time. Only recently have they been well supported and affordable...

He wants dual CPU's. So where does the Athlon fit into this? 760MP will cost a fortune when it first comes out, so dual P3's are the way to go.

I've seen a Kyro II in action, and it was damn quick. GF3 is a waste of money atm, as by the time things come out that support it, GF4 and Radeon 3 will be out. But I certainly wouldnt trade Radeon in for either card. But then, visual quality is important to me :)

Ive just built a new rig with a Kyro II, well impressed with it. Quake 3 bounces along on it.

Duron 900 @ 1 Gig
Gigabyte GA-7ZXR
128 Mb RAM
Kyro II
Dual boot Win2k & Win98SE

Kyro 2 is a good card for the price. If you've got loads of money then GF3 is better. If not Kyro 22 is pretty good.

DDR is daaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn cheap now :)

Heh. The board im getting doesnt support DDR unfortunatly.
Im most likely gonna be going for the Abit VP6.

Horus, ignore the gypsies...stick with Intel. BTW, I-Will make a DUAL p3 board, that supports DDR ram too (think the board is called the i-will ddr-266) All the reviews I erad of it gave it the huge thumbs up

hmmm :\ one of the guys that reviewd a board offered to sell it to me dirt cheap. Wish I'd taken his offer up now

Heh. Ill just go for the Abit. More leeway for overclocking and tbh you dont get THAT much benefit from DDR due to the way the P3 handles memory.

ok.. here is my 2 cents..

if you is doing any big database, graphic or video stuff the dual cpus will rock... so chill out guys this dude may well do that and just play some games for some added fun.

I have read some reports on anandtech.com and tomshardware that a dual p3 system is slower than a single athlon in tests. If you wanna bad ass machine get an Athlon 1Gig AXIA core and o/c to 1500Mhz.

If you wanna wait for the 760.. cool get a baad ass ddr setup going on.. Crucial DDR RAM is now as cheep as the PC133 stuff.

But back to the point of the thread... the graphics card....

If you have the cash to spend get a GF3. If not get the Kryo II.

As i said before, i dont need to justify why i want a dual cpu system, its the gfx card im on about.
And as it goes i DO done a lot of rendering, so the cpus will come in handy.

Shut your yap, the GF3 pisses all over the Kyro 2...which is a good chip in its own right but just isn't a match for the GF3...Elvis has left the building.

I've just read a review on the Kyro II and it says it rocks! Only the GF3 can beat it in the tests in 32bit colour.... mainly due to the way it processes it. It's damn cheap too! In fact, I tink I will save up for one... (n.b.. the best kyroII card by a mile is the Prophet 5500, closely followed by the 4500 version. Do not get the vivid xs one) :)

Not sure what number it is, but its a 64MB Prophet card.
