Was one of my favourite programs! It's a shame they took it off so early, especially while it was still successful.

Some of the channels/companies involved should consider remaking certain series. Instead of all the crap reality TV shows you could actually have something decent to watch! I'd say theres nothing wrong with relaunching an old programme (just look at Doctor Who), just as long as they realise it needs to be updated.

Bring back Knightmare! :p

Knightmare was horrible imo!

they go to all this trouble to make it look good (for the time it was made in I guess it was hi tech) then they put the most BORING kids in the world as contestants!

imo it would be far better if you had some more excitement to it, rather than boring pricks that look like they're headed for university challenge! (imo again)

Admittedly I didnt watch it much (for the above reasons), but what I did see of it I really hated :\

but each to thier own! :) if you really liked it then good luck in getting it back on air :)

4 of my old classmates got on it in 1988 or 89, they got about 3/4 of the way through before dying to some giant swinging axe/pendulum contraption.

I was reading a documentary about the history of Knightmare, how ambitious and far ahead of its time it was and all the problems they had with the TV companies etc. Interesting stuff.

I remember being glued to the TV when it was on, but now having looked at it again I cant remember why, it hasn't really aged well :]

The early episodes are approaching 20 years old though, 3D tech was only just starting to come through into Hollywood and here we had a kids TV program that was a decade ahead of anything else around. Makes me wonder what they could come up with these days when you consider how much more powerful the workstations and render farms of today are.

i loved it

so i want it left alone, if they either re-air it (lol ?) or even worse re-make it, will ruin it imo, they dont make em like that anymore, and anyone who interferes with it will fuck it up.

wouldnt work anyway.. video game type program where kids *die* ?

If they did 're-air' it, yeah 99% sure it just wouldn't be the same, but they could at least get permish from the old cast etc, so they can release old dvd's of it that don't cost £30-40 from the website ;(

Would be nice if the companies who hold the rights to the old programmes did something with them once there is no longer any interest from any TV stations to air it. Especially when a DVD release won't get enough sales, they just hold onto the episodes so nobody can enjoy them.

I'd love it if they could release all the episodes on BitTorrent, licensed under something like a fairly restrictive creative commons licence (this one). The cost of distributing it would be quite small and it would make many fans happy.

The problem with that ever happening is that up until about 1995 alot of production companies deleted or destroyed master tapes of shows that were less than moderately successful. Alot of British TV heritage was burnt or binned up to that point and so I would imagine that most of those Knightmare masters no longer exist.

Ok it seems I was wrong about the Knightmare masters, they seem to be intact and complete which is great news :D

Sadly my point still stands though for other old TV shows, far too many master have gone to the great archive in the sky because TV companies can't be arsed to spend a little time and money preserving the reels in decent storage archives.

Q4: Are there any plans for a DVD or video release of Knightmare?

No official videos of DVDs of Knightmare episodes have ever been released. In April 2003, Granada Media (owners of Anglia Television) were interested in releasing a DVD of all Knightmare episodes, plus additional material such as never seen before pilot episodes. However, they were unsure if the market is big enough to warrant a release, and were concerned that illegal tape copying may affect demand. As a result, a new petition was run in Summer 2003 (now completed) and was been sent to Granada Media - no response was received.

Whilst fans may have tape traded Knightmare episodes in the past, we think that this will have little affect on the potential sales of a DVD release, as it would certainly be far better picture and sound quality than any old video tapes, and also there is the likelihood of exclusive content.

The main difficulty with releasing Knightmare in the past was that Knightmare actors were not paid royalty fees for video releases etc at the time of filming. Such a release would involve a large negotiation process with the actors, and it is not thought that the revenue that would be generated from a video release would make the process worthwhile. However, DVDs are cheaper to produce and distribute than videos, and therefore a DVD release can take place with a smaller market demand than video tape, so it potentially means Knightmare has a better chance of being released on this format.

Anglia Television can make single copies of Knightmare episodes for you, but at high cost (£37/£75+) primarily because each episode has to be copied individually to order, from the original archives and requires use of expensive equipment. If you are interested, you need to contact Anglia TV directly. See angliatv.com for contact details.

Any knews on such developments are first posted to the mailing list, and then the website. We do not wait until the next site update before reporting these. If you see no announcements on the mailing list or website, then it is because there has not been any knews
