UH OH!

Clever me I tried to update my kernel to 2.4.3 from 2.4

Was that a mistake

I've lost all my settings, like there is no X server, it won't start and when I ran sax it wouldn't let me install any cards 'GeForce 2 MX' as there were no x servers loaded for them, but there are! or were.

Here is what I done so far:

gzip -cd linux-2.4.3.tar.gz | tar xvf -

cd linux

make mrproper

make config [set up my kernel]

make dep

make bzImage

make bzdisk [floppy disk boot]

I then rebooted, inserted floppy disk everything seemed to load fine except the USBmanager for some weird reason, but it just left me at console, no KDE or anything. I can't load Sax2 becasue of no X Server

What can I do?

you'd be suprised how many peeps read the technical forums. you could stick this in the OS one and some linux god would prolly drop by and help you out.

duh :)
or Bids, Flatus or anyone else for that matter. There are several linux users on BW you know. I'd just rather this was in the OS forum. That's what it's there for. Please don't tell me I'm being a 'big bad meanie' again just cos I'm attempting to preserve some kind of order here.

Anyway, as ? prolly suspects, he's bolloxed his kernel and has to make a new one. Only next time he'll want to do a make menuconfig as that is a bit more friendly.
Btw, why are you booting from a floppy?

Did you forget to "make modules"?

just asking...

Logic is right - you need to 'make modules' to compile the module files for your new kernel.

You also need to run make modules_install to put the modules in the correct tree (/lib/modules).

You then need to configure LILO to boot from your new image.
(By editing lilo.conf).

If your system is borked, you can boot from the floppy you created during the install (?), which will contain the old kernel - this should at least get your system back running again.

This can be quite a complex process, so I'd suggest getting a Que book or summit - they show you how to revert back if things go pear shaped, etc.

Hope that helps ;)

Maybe im missing something here, but how can going from 2.4.3 to 2.4 be called an upgrade? isnt that a downgrade?
