Ok cast your minds back to DAOC. We all know some people put in LOTS of effort, into what we are being told was boring by the Devs of WAR by ensuring they had high level woodworking skills.

These woodworking skills, among other things, allowed a dedicated woodworker.....along with the guilds help, to upgrade a guild keeps gates, from the paper thing standard to the mighty (when I last played) level 10 doors.

Question.

I dont know a lot about crafting in WAR...but hasnt it been broken down to very basic functionality so its more 'fun'?

Will guilds and people who dedicate time and resources into a crafting skill be able to upgrade their keep? I hope that is the case, anything else is just more dumbing down from what we have had in the past.

Anyone know or allowed to say anything further to this?

Im really hoping that dedicated guilds and crafters still have a role to fill, rather than making everything more 'fun' (dumbed down) and that guilds can enhance keeps, doors and such.

Sounds very nice! but as long as we don't know all the crafting skill I really can't tell.

Upgrading boiling oil with alchemy sounds nice.

Ahh, lovely memories of people spending 3 hours lugging tonnes of wood into the frontier (with noone sticking around to defend) so they could fix a keep door and prevent the keep being retaken immediately.

And instead it'd be taken at 3am...

I'd rather not see that in WAR ;) but if they have ways to use crafting stuff (talismans and potions are the only things they've said we can make so far) improve keep defence more than just buffing the people drinking the potions/wearing the talismans then that's cool.

A good thing was that it enabled me to read up for some exams, because I could sit with a book in front of the screen and every "pling" just press my key.
So I could grind while reading :D

any part of a game that requires you to do something else (watch a movie, play a different game, read a book, etc.) to enjoy it is probably not ideal.

It's a decent way to combine 2 necessary evils though.

About the wood thing to improve doors, that went out with NF, a very long time ago.
Then you only needed tons of wood to repair walls, towers and doors.

High level woodworking just meant you could more easily repair high level doors which got that high in the first place because the owning guild spent GBP's on it. The hardest thing about repairing the keep doors was getting wood, personally I loved DAoC but I never got that excited about it.

Not many crafting systems in mmo's are actually much fun, a notable example would be SWG, but most can be pretty much considered unnecessary grinding.

Some sort of 'Siege' upgrade crafting would be interesting (Architect, Engineer-Ooops, already taken as career, Tinker perhaps?) though not sure it'll be in as they seem to like the concept of crafting consumables only

Also, I can imagine it where you 'buy' your keep upgrades from an NPC/Vendor instead through some sort of pts system perhaps?

Happy to wait and see but every confidence in Mythic making it all fun :drink: They seem to be good at the fun part *grins*

Atleast you have to gather stuff and so on,on daoc one macro could get you all the way to LGM

I think the now somewhat old-school crafting system in UO had the right idea... Took literally months to get to GM in smithing/fletching/tailoring etc, but you actually activly used the skills, cos all you needed to do was sit at the forge in Britain, and people would queue up asking for repairs, new equipment, etc. You got some good banter, and it was never really boring. It was actually >playing< a crafter, rather than just having a character capable of making stuff.

UO had things perfect, amazing real fantasy working world. How a MMO shoul dbe.

then they introduced Trammel and made 2 seperate games, one for crafters and a seperate world for any kind of danger.

What a disgraceful decision that was imo!

BTW , in my original post I wasnt trying to insinuate that DAOC had a perfect crafting system, more than hard work had a real impact on guilds Keeps, something I think/hope should be kept for WAR.

My point was that nothing appears? to be geared towards a dedicated guild building up their Keep defences so that it might become notorious on a server and that this is a step back on content we had and loved on DAOC.

Hmm - good point - that would seem to favour teh Zerg!

Personally I think crafting should be mind crushingly dull and expensive so that the skills are valued - Age of Conan had the worst crafting system with crafting being just an aspect of levelling so everyone had multiple crafts - naff!

It just makes some certain chinese people craft stuff and sell it on AH/whatever system War has.

That is still better than everyone being a crafter and zero market for crafted goods IMHO.

As someone who crafts a lot in MMO's id much rather the skills were hard to get - makes the sense of achievement when you max em so much greater.
