Well, I think aoami was discussing wether that sword should be regarded as a "katana" or not...

I think that there are two-handed katanas too, though... and that they are called... the horror.... dai-katana.

I like to think of a katana as more of a 2-hander and a wakizashi, the shorter version, more of a 1-hander. :p
Could be wrong, but neither of them belongs in DAoC anyway!

Well...according to most games, and japanese story....then katanas are mostly used as 1h. But, still it was crafted to be used as 2h in the same way. Pretty light weapon as well.

Try check out old samurai movies or such...you'll be able to see how many attack moves they do useing Katana with 2 hands.

Dai-Katana's aren't 2h weapons....its a shorter version of the katana. Higher rank officers, lords used these weapons either as backup...or the the socalled duel wield we have in daoc. Short weapon as offhand and longer weapon as mainhand :)

Plz correct me if im wrong :)

The shorter ones are called Tanto's or Wakishashi.
These were also the ones used to commit suicide with. (honour and all that)

Japanese swords came in 3 lengths, Tanto the smallest ceremonial blade normally 12"-14" long, Wakishashi or the off hand "dagger" - normally with a 18"-22" blade, and the Katana, the main fighting sword with a 30"-34" blade and 8" grip for 1 or 2 handed use. For true duel weild or "Daisho", two Wakashashi could be worn.

The Wakashashi was worn at all times, while the Katana would be removed indoors and was mainly for use on the battle feild. The Tanto was not worn most of the time, but often carried into battle, so they could perform Hari-Kiri if they felt a dishonered death during battle.

They came in straight blades, middle eastern influence gave them the curved features we often see. And they didnt have barbs like the one in the SS's, as this deformation could weaken the materials.

"The Forces of Ravenbourne have taken control of Excalibur > Midgard!"

I thought the Katana had an ever so slight curve in it so that all the force was concentrated in one place on the blade edge?

Having trained in katana kata's back in university, katana's are tradtionally used 2h (but can be used 1h as its akin to a bastard sword). Wakishashi's are 1h and are again tradtionally used for suicide (seppuku) only. Tanto's are akin to a daggers and are used for mudane work. Dai-katana's are BIG 2h'ers akin to claymore and used from horseback. Ninja-to's are straight edged version of katana with a shorter blade.

Cheers,

Garsha
