It looks as if all the servers that were started Karak ... are now all starting with Karag.

Whats the story behind this? Is it a mistake?

My oh my, been so long since I was into the warhammer dwarf/skaven lore that I can't really remember anymore, but I know Karak and Karag have something to do with dwarf cities and mountains (some of them skaven now through), can't remember which is mountains and which is cities through

The sad and boring truth seems to be that the writers were not particularly consistent in the original Warhammer material about the spelling or naming, so both found their way onto the maps of their world. To be fair, it was just one of many fan-made RPG worlds back then so it's not a huge surprise! There have ben a few attempts to 'justify' the names, usually falling back on vague 'they mean slightly different things about the structure/shape/size/passability' of the mountains, at one time they suggested Karag meant 'volcano' but that didn't always fit either - but it's not worth obsessing over really, it just isn't consistent!

And AngelHeal - You're getting confused with reality ;) Kerak, or Krak, or Karak (pick your transcription of what the locals called it) was the Middle Eastern term applied to the crusader castles and similar Islamic structures - I can't recall offhand if it's Turkic in origin, or another language.... but probably not Dwarf!

Karak Eight Peaks is the Greenskin Capital City, surround by the Eight Mountains all beginning with Karag as their name.

Looking at the maps Karag is a mountain, Karak is a dwarven fortress (usually inside a mountain) - though obviously these can have been abandoned/be infested with greenskins.

Karag Orrud is "Red Cloud Mountain", Karag Dron is "Thunder Mountain"

Maybe someone got trigger happy with renaming Karak Eight Peaks, looks as if this should have stayed the way it was.

Karak-, Karag-, and Karaz-names were indeed normalized to Karak a while back. This was a blunder and as such was corrected and we now have the original Games Workshop approved names listed.

My Khazalid is somewhat stuttering but I believe there are nuances distinguishing the three words and we'll continue to honour this. Naturally, the guy responsible for this mistake is paying the rounds for a few pub crawls to come.
