right this is addressed to u tech's out there - :)

i was thinking of upgrading my pc an aging groaning p2 333 (@375), and after many yrs of married bliss with intel, i was thinking of getting a divorce and going down the Amd route .....

the base system i was looking at is

1) Asus K7V morherboard

2) 256 mb pc133 memory

3) K7 650 (may overclock it - i can solder - but assume not)

4) Plextor plexwrite cdrw 8/4/32

5a) a NV15 (when they appear)
5b) till then a old ati card + 12 mb v2 (sli)

my questions are -

1) anyone have any idea of the frame rates it would be likly to give me on Q3a (un clocked)?

2) anyone no what the max cpu speed is on the asus K7V ?

3) will the K7V support the new k7 when it appears (the one with the full speed cache - Thunderbird ), the 600/650 are pretty cheap so if i could stick one of them in for now and then upgrade again when the new one is abit cheaper ..... ?

4) what are the sucess rates when o/c the 600/650 and how much work to do it (prob wont be bothered so ....) ?

5) any dates for the nv15 (nv still talking about easter) ?

thanks for any help

i would reckon the frame rate would be pretty high, what with the NV15 or geforce 2

urr, prolly say about 140 fps in q3 demo001 @ 1024 x 768 all normal. But its prolly cpu dependant, so if ya can get it up to 800, or 1 ghz, then itll be really good.

I think you'd be better off waiting for the Abit KA7 motherboard, its a VIA KX133 and looks a sure asskicker. Should be out in a few weeks.

The Sledgehammer is AMD's 64-bit CPU, the competitor to Intel's Itanium, I think you are referring to the Thunderbird, which is the 133Mhz FSB version of the Athlon.

AMD are producing their own version of a 133Mhz FSB chipset (AMD 760) which will be able to use the 133Mhz FSB CPUs, but I suspect they will also work in the current batch of VIA KX133 chipsets too.

BTW, AMD are also working on a dual-Athlon chipset, the AMD 770, due out in Q3/2000.

thanks, thought id typed thinderbird ;)

the KV7 uses the VIA KX133 chipset too, its just the first mb ive seen available in my area (manchester) + ive seen a couple of ok reviews for it.

so i suppose the question should have read .....

will the VIA KX133 chipset/mb's support the AMD Thunderbird cpu, when it finally appears :)

ta btw :)
