Problem of course was that until the 1950s all of the theories behind eugenics were just so much bullshit, but because of the Nazis, doing anything overt in terms of human genetic modification/correction once Crick and Watson had discovered DNA was largely politically unacceptable.

Without the nazis, eugenics may well have evolved from bad science (almost all prewar racial theory was nonsense) into good science (genetics), but that's no longer possible. Of course in the long run genetic modification will still happen, its just that it will be driven by different factors; instead of bogus racial theory, it will be driven by good reasons like hereditary disease prevention, but also bad reasons like the insurance industry and human vanity.

The biggest problem with genetic modification is simply "who controls it"? Can any government be trusted with our genetic heritage? Can any private corporation? I'd say "no" on both counts, but its happening anyway.

Of course you can create a master race, but it will slowly de-evolve unless you keep going with more and more draconian methods.
As I've posted my worry is this ever increasing underclass and the slow slide of culture to meet it, somewhere , someone is watching.
