Just been sitting here watching Sky News and thought of something:

if Argentina decided to take the Falklands, have we got any troops left to do anything about it? Even equipment? Does anyone have a breakdown of the figures of our military personnel?

The Americans still have loads of grunts back home so can defend and participate in other "wars" or issues across the world.

Am I right to think this or completely off track?

Also, anyone got a url to a decent comparision between the Challenger 2 and the M1 Abrahams? I keep hearing that the Challenger is superior yet cannot find any comparisions. This is about armour (I know the Americans use our Chobham stuff) and the barrel and rounds they can fire.

Cheers me dears.

We still have the Tornado F3s up in Scotland / England to defend the airspace over the UK, and I'm almost certain there's still a sqd of Harriers at RAF Whittering.

As for ground troops / Royal Navy I'm not sure, as we're spread quite thin. I suppose if we were attacked we could call troops back based in Sierra Leon, Afghanistan, the Balkans and the numerous of other troops on peacekeeping duty throughout the world.

There are also a number of units not gone to the gulf (like the F3s, and other ground forces), because they are not needed / kept back for defence.

Since the Argies attacked, we've had quite a number of personel on the Falklands, with RAF Tornados having been based there (not sure if they are still there).

If push came to shove, we could call on the TA, and any reservists. Many of the training aircraft used by the RAF (mainly the Hawk, based at RAF Valley) have basic air to air capibilities and are able to carry missiles for air defence.

So although we're not totally fucked, we'd have to use our 'last' bit of defence if there was a major attack :)

I doubt tho we could launch an attack on the Argies if they invaded again and keep the number of troops currently in Iraq.

AFAIK we have committed less than 1/3rd to the Gulf, and there is a permanent garrison of 2,000 in the Falklands.

UK manpower is around 200,000 all of them volunteer.

True but a half a mile to the gallon its never going to be popular as a tourer...

Lets face it IF the argies did start anything we could more then likely call on old war mongerer bush to send a few lads round and sort em out :p

But really 2000 ppl in the falklands would be more then enough to keep the islands safe till we could send support.

I think we have plenty left here and in the Falklands -- also of course if we were attacked here then all of NATO are obliged to come to our aid aswell ---- the Germans and French may not want to but I dont see even them wriggling out of that one ! -- and the US would def help.

Isn't that only in the case of wars in the Northern Hemisphere/Atlantic area?

No i mean if we are attacked here - in the British Isles. I assume the Falklands were seen as a "posession" rather than pt of us -- after all I dont recall there being a Falklands MP etc

My elder brother is a radar bod at Wittering - it's not an operational base anymore - no. 1 Fighter Squadron has moved to Cottesmore and Wittering is now a conversion unit - they train Navy/RAF pilots to fly Harriers. From what he has said we still have a load of fighters at RAF Luchars/other RAF bases and there is a permanent detachment of Tornado's F1's in the Falklands.

Really? That must have been quite recent, cos I visited it when my brother was on hold there and I'm almost certain 1 sqd were still there. Damn the RAF and its relocation plans.

heh, he was the 'Harrier Display Team Manager' - still, the jammy sod got a flight :|

Xane the US did help during the first Falkland war, only logistics. Think that had to do with Maggie wanting to do battle with only British troops. Tho I also doubt that the US would send troops for just the Falklands.

That was nice of them, considering the British Crown owns it.

Argentina don't have the funds to fund an attack on the falklands. Last I heard the country was near bankruptcy?
