So ou know the circular icon at the end of movie credits with the number under it?

That's actually the "serial" number of a movie, incase you didn't know.

Now it's currently at around 46000.

Calculated that at 8 hours a day, with the average length of a movie being 2 hours(assumption), you'd have to spend 365 days a year, for 31.5 years to watch them all :D

Useless calculations for the preverbial win.

is it a unique world-wide identifier? as in no other film can possibly have the same number? what about small independent movies?

It's an MPAA number.
A film only gets that serial number if it's been submitted and approved for a rating in the US.
Since most big films need a rating to get shown in mainstream cinemas, it's almost a given that it gets submitted.

Note that educational films and porn don't apply for a rating and so don't have serial number at the end. They only have the studio's production number.

Those porn production numbers always end with 69.

Thanks for the clearing.

About filmas coming out, wiki answers had this;

"The total number of films released in the U.S. in 2007 remained on par with 2006 with 603 films released."

So each year, you have to count out 603 movies.

8 hours a day you manage 1460 films /year(4 /day)

So, you're effectively gaining 857 movies / year.

53.6 years to get "stable" and then by watching all the new releases (150 days /year on movies), you can keep saying you've seen all the movies with a MPAA rating).

My math may be off, but that's a life goal if any :D

Could make it before i die, if i spent all my free time watching movies. Though living past 80 by working and watching movies, doubtful!

But thing IS, with 600 movies(atleast) a year, you'd have to see atleast 300 to make an educated guess on the quality of ALL the movies, that year alone.

Sure we see the mainstream crap that comes along with mainstream goodies, but what about the non-mainstream gems?

This begs to ask the question; are hollywood churning out crap, or are WE to blame for not looking for comparison beyond mainstream? ;)
