Ok - I've been playing the demo of UT for ages - I cant play online, cause my PC is too slow (cyrix 166+, 32 mb, VII), BUt, I got it working quite nicely in the demo, nice enough for me, it played well - nuff said.

Sooo, spotting it on budget for £9.99 at the weekend I finally bought it, to my horror having installed it I cannot even access the menu screen as it throws up this error:
Critical Error:
General Protection fault!

History: UObject::processEvent < - (UTIntro Entry.UTIntro0, Function Engine.GameInfo.InitGame) < - BeginPlay < - UGameEngine::LoadMap < - UGameEngine::Init < - InitEngine

I dont know what that last code gumpf is, but it might be relevent...

Also, this happens after the hard drive has churned for a little while - about the same length of time that the demo took to load.

Anyway, this means that I cant get into the game at all, despite the fact that the demo worked absolutely fine.

The only difference is that this is the "game of the year" version of UT - but surely that shoulnt make any difference at all? and it does say in the readme that it will run on my spec. I've tried the UT site and there appears to be no information about this problem.

Have any of you encountered it? or can you at least point me in the direction of resources that will help?

Thanks in advance.

dunno if this will help but once I installed UT in a PC and the HD was almost full, and got that kind of errors always, ut wouldn't launch.

Win 95.

I'm guessing, from the minimal programming knowledge that I have, that that big mamma bog of code, is basically telling it "Play the intro movie" (I'm informed that there is one).

Not a bad idea about the HD - though of the two installs I've tried, I think I have a good 200 meg free.

I will try messin with virtual mem too.

Thanks.

Please list your complete system specs. I'm not trying to be funny, but a cyrix 166 may not have the oomph required to run the full UT.

Do you have DirectX7.0a installed? UT requires that, although the demo would work fine on DirectX6.1 if memory serves me correct.

Specs:

okie:

Cyrix 166+
256k cache
32MB RAM
Voodoo II 8 mb
48x CD
Diamond Sonic Impact S90 Soundcard - Aureal 1.x

Now, Harddrive space:
I have 350 mb on the drive it's installed on, though my virtual memory is on "automatic" - I'm going to set that up optimally tonight.

Thanks for your help.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I do have Dx 7.0a installed. should I try reinstalling this?

U could try reading the UnrealTournament.log in the system directory...

thanks Mig - but sadly no luck - still gives the same error.

Out of intrest, as I'm yet to see what UT does when it loads - doe sit play a demo like, say, Q2, or does it just jump straight into the menu like it does in the demo?

It plays a demo. U press escape to make the menu appear.

Seems it's an hardware problem, I guess... Those specs are kinda... well you know :(

Still, give a look to the log created in /ut/system/ dir. It will point you out which module caused the crash. At first glance, it seems that it only crashes when the demo is loading, disable it by editing unrealtournament.ini. Check that tweaks homepage. It will show you how.

32 MB Ram and 300 Mb HD space...

That's ur problem.
The demo is pretty large, UT takes up a lot of memory space and I reckon ur onboard memory is already full with the OS. When u start UT the swap file comes into play and with only 300 Mb you don't have the HD space for UT and demo.
Try disabling the demo as mentioned here but most of all try to get more internal memory... although a Cyrix 166 is very low spec m8... (it's even below spec as the minimum required CPU is a Pentium 166 if I'm correct). The Cyrix also ain't got the oomph to run UT. It has a rating of P166, but that's the CPU power only, in a 3D game like UT you need a good FPU too and the Cyrix doesn't have a good one, it's rated lower than a P90 as far as I can remember...
I had a Cyrix 166 too and I played Q2 on it 3 years ago and quickly switched to a P233 after I found out the framerates were very bad...

I hope this helps.

Don't mess with the virtual memory! You don't have the disk space to ph00l with it...
If you want UT to run, buy a new machine. If you've disabled the demo and it still won't run then it's no use trying on this machine spec.
