Yeah, sounds pretty reasonable. :)

Check task manager and view "processes", you can click on the "Mem Usage" heading to sort by memory usage, if you're concerned you could have a quick look there for anything that's running away.

Hmm task manager says that I'm using 303mb of 1048mb just with xp, mozilla and nothing much else running. And I even had a cleanout of my startup and services yesterday.

Check out theeldergeek if you want to fiddle around with your msconfig and try and free up some resources. Although judging by the lack of effect it had on my memory usage it probably won't make much difference what you do.

Just as a point of interest the processes listed in task manager don't add up to anywhere near my total used memory.

Aye, there's a load of mystery background gunk as well :) Checking processes means you can usually establish if there's something gone really wrong. For instance, I used to have a 450 MB memory leak in Outpost Firewall's logging system that would grind the system to a halt every 6 hours. 'Tis useful for double checking such things.

I seem to remember a little program called FreeMemPlus I had on my old pc that showed exactly how much resources you were using and allowed you to try and free up as much RAM as you wanted, when you wanted. But then it was very common and you probably already know about it anyway :p Just thought I'd mention it in case you had forgotten ;)

Not sure if it would be much use though as it was a few years ago now since I bothered using it.

I've noticed it too, XP is strange, with 256mb of RAM it used about 100mb. When I upgraded to 768mb it used 300mb (Strange that it's 3x the ammount used with 3x the ram) and exactly the same stuff running.

Win XP can run in 64MB of ram allegedly. Even with this little amount of RAM, it wouldnt use it all up to boot the OS. Instead it will just swap more info out to disk more often causing the HDD to thrash and generally slow down the system.

I found that XP with 128MB is damn slow and 256 is adequate. With 512MB you find that XP likes to use up ~250MB to boot the OS. When you up your memory to 1Gig, the OS doesnt really load much more in. Its still using 250->300 MB. All that will happen is that it will not use the swap file as much when you start loading applications.
