Jump.cs, Sin or Saviour

There has been multiple discussions about it, Does using Jump.cs classify as cheating?

I use it but I don't feel that it gives an advantage or spoils the game. I have been playing the game for quiet a long time now, even to the point when I remember the whole of BL skiing by hitting the keyboard down as fast as their little thumbs would go. When jump.cs came out we all got it for the sake of our spacebars.

I remember having the same problem on my Amstrad PCP464 for the game Daily Thompsons Decathlon. You had to rattle the joystick side to side in order to get him to run faster and I won't even go into how many joysticks I went through playing that game.

Some of you obviously don't mind going through 8 keyboards a year due to your spacebar falling to pieces but I would rather not.

I bought this up to see how many people felt the same as me?

If Dynamix were against it in the first place why didn't they fix it in the last 8 or so patches that have come out since it was discovered? There new BasePlus patch is purely and simply for beta testing skiing on Tribes 2 not a fix for Tribes1.

I started using jump.cs for the same reason you did initially... to save my spacebar.

I don't consider it cheating in the same sense as auto-beacons or such scripts. I consider it a minor advantage as I for one can ski WITHOUT jump.cs (I was doing that up until I discovered the thing last summer). You still need a modicum of skill though to ski efficiently with it.

There is no doubt that jump.cs single-handedly created heavy skiing and before we knew it, Tribes had accelerated from a strategic squad game into a race to get the Heavy artillery into the NME base. The reason Dynamix have left skiing alone is because that is what a majority of players have asked for. The latest patch was another example of Dynamix giving the public what they wanted (stopping blatant cheat scripts).

I suppose the main definition of a cheat script in Tribes is one that unbalances the gameplay too far in favour of the person running the script. Jump.cs speeds up heavies, but lights can also slip like demons and get flag caps. In that case, all the armour classes get the same advantage. Scripts such as Shiva unbalance the game in favour of heavies alone, making other classes next to useless.

PS. Doesn't matter if you get your hands on any of the cheat scripts now, any server running 1.11 will stop you from using them.

“Tribes had accelerated from a strategic squad game into a race to get the Heavy artillery into the NME base”

You must playing a different game from me Zenith, last time I played tribes it was most definitely a squad game where teamwork, organisation and tactics are far more critical than individual skill.

When Heavy O was first used it did unbalance the game, as most sides were not prepared to defend against it. However the days of camping the enemy’s base are long gone, as defences have more than compensated for it. Today HO’s usage varies depending on level but is mainly used to distract the enemy’s defence to give the LO a chance.

Tribes gameplay has changed quite a bit over the last year and a half but has kept its balance, imaging trying to get the flag on snowblind against a MnO, LAW or cF style defence without heavy O.

There’s nothing wrong with jump.cs as it doesn’t let you do anything you couldn’t do without it. It didn’t create HO, skiing, disc jumps and most importantly creative players were responsible.

Yes you are both talking about different games - public server tribes and league match tribes - they're about as far apart as you can get in a squad based fps game :/

Too true Ewan, makes me sad for those who haven't tried it, and damn glad I did :)Still, different strokes, I suppose...

Jump.cs should have been shipped in the original tribes ;)

Jump.cs is one of the best scripts, it makes tribes the way it is fast and furious.
Taking it out of tribes 2 will kill the game and most people will still play tribes1.
Imagine no sking it would take you 1/2 hour to get to there base ,by that time they would of deployed 2000 turrets.

Hence the reason the ground craft in Tribes2 will be faster than skiing. Lights will still be able to ski, but there will be more rugged landscapes. The upshot is that lights can still get some speed up, but they could trip over on an outcropping.

Yeah Mobley has a point there, it'll be like playing Scarabrae. Takes you an eternity to get there then you die and repeat the process over and over *yawn*

Mind you it has been suggest the T2 servers will be 16 a side which makes things a bit more favourable.
