I've had no dealings with Norton personally so I'd classify them as lesser demons of Heck rather than proper Hell-spawn.

NAV once completely fucked an XP install on my work box. All running fine, XP happy etc. Install NAV. Entire machine promptly b0rks, XP falls over, impossible to even boot into safe mode to do system restore. Ended up doing the fdisk cha-cha-cha and the w2k install waltz, never to touch either XP or NAV again.

So it's a proper spawn of Satan's loins as far as I'm concerned :)

I agree on the software side. All AV software is designed to b0rk your PC on a regular basis which they can then blame on a virus caused by the fact that you aren't paying them enough money.

Network Associates are evil in many other ways tho. Particularly their support section... and their PR department... and they just are OK ?!? :eek:

Why do some people think the AV corporate's are employing people to write virii?

Do they actually do this?

Is a firewall and AV software actually a waste of time?

Not entirely. But they often cause as many problems as the occasional virus would and cost you a fortune and they don't catch half the virii anyway. If users are told that they will be sacked if they open attachments you'd have a much more effective system :)

I don't think AV companies create virii. I'm not that paranoid but their PR departments constantly warn us that if we don't double our spending an AV software then Osama Bin Laden will rape our children (indirectly) or something.

Also Network Associates are generally the most unhelpful cunts I've ever come across which is a bloody cheek considering how much money we already give them.
