I could be totally misinformed here but imo I think it is all the media coverage we are exposed to these days which blows everythig out of proportion. In the 60s there was no where near as much information being hurled at us, crime statistics and gruesome details, world news on such a scale and in such an immediate way.

Also people didn't tend to air their dirty laundry in public quite as much, so folk who were drunks, drug addicts, abused (or abusers) teen pregnancy or STD sufferers didn't all run off to the nearesr website or newspaper and make their story public for all to read. As a result though these markers of a poor/bad social environment were certainly there and thriving they were not openly discussed and therefore not at the forefront of peoples minds. Now though you can't switch on the telly without hearing about something horrible, followed by something even more horrible followed by an interview with Jordan about her latest dastardly deed (and, lets face it the media are absolute terrors for blowing things out of proportion and misrepresenting facts) which would be enough to make anyone tear out their hair and scream "This country has gone to the dogs!!"

I don't think there is more badness, and from reading that article it seems there is actually less of some aspects, I just think ignorance is bliss and knowing about all the horrors of daily life is not conducive to a happy society.
