Its the results of a recent SFX poll
Its nice it gets some recognition, but I think its always going to be the film that no one really knew about. I think I only watched one trailer on TV before it came out in the cinemas, I imagine Star Wars and the like had a lot more publicity

I'm not bitter, i've got firefly on dvd and the few episodes i've seen have been pretty good so far
Struck me as being a Blake's 7 rip off with modern day effects
It has a cult following at best, it's not a huge series, albeit one which a group of people are passionate about.
I can't remember exactly, but serenity bombed at the box office too. I'll proabbly see that too eventually.
I just think the whole fandom phenomena is facinating, especially how obsessed people can be when it comes to their favourite cult shows.

It didn't do well at the box office because not many screens showed it. Those that did were pretty packed. Managed to chart very high during it's short release, despite showing on few screens.
On DVD release it was charting at number one in the supermarket I got it in, above a few major blockbusters (inc a Nick Park animated movie, forget which one) that released at the same time.
It's not the best TV or Movie ever made, but is streets ahead of lots of stuff that is still being made, shame that TV execs cut stuff so fast in the US. B5:Crusade also had a lot of promise.

On it's domestic release in the US it didn't even come close to making it's production costs back. and that was with a relese to 2,189 theatres on opening weekend which isn't actually too bad.
It always was going to do better on DVD release anyway as cult programs do as every fan buys it as oppsed to general releases where people pick and choose what they want.

Comfortably outselling starwars. You reckon? The star wars trilogy sold 1.5million copies in the uk alone and god knows how many more VHS versions were sold at the time. 2.5 million DVDs were sold world wide on the 1st day of release
Oh and the poll on the BBC website, comfortably has Star wars as the best Sci fi film ever.

Starwars will be known as the best Sci-fi film for about another 3 decades at most then it will fade away. Sure that is a long time, but the main reason it stands out is the fact it was such a different thing and it had major implications in the genre. When people that remember that sort of thing start fading away (read dying) then newer films will take its place.
I enjoy the starwars films, however the remakes and the new films are quite poor in comparison. I hated the remakes, just changed to many little things, and Episode 1 was awful. The new ones improved over time but finished in probably the worst way possible with "dying for no reason". You build the character up to be strong in mind and a fighter just for them to give up and not give a shit about her children! I just didnt like that
Firefly is great, it was great stories with good humour, tension etc. Everything you wanted. The series was amazing but it didnt really pick up till after it had been cancelled. And one the reasons it didnt pick up was that they kept moving the time slot in what seemed to be an attempt to make it fail after they had run ins with Joss.
Serenity was a good pick up on that, kept the comedy and put a bit more of a dark side to it. Only let down was that they took two good characters out the equation, though i am hoping that they will sort this out by one the future movies being a prequel in which you see more of character pasts, even if it in the manner of the episode in the firefly series using flashbacks (cant remember episode name).
Firefly has a repeatability to it that many series dont have. The humour never gets dull because they use the full range of it. And there are so many ways in which they could take the story. Gives better veriation then you could ever got from Starwars as you had a set story you knew they would go down. (not including extended universe. If they made films of Thrawn Trillogy, Rogue Squadron series etc then they would absolutely hammer any records imo as they are just such amazing bases for a story)
Anyways, getting off subject.
In summary they are both good, but due to starwars couple of decades head start they will always keep their lead in the masses. However, when it comes to straight SciFi fans, then i beleive that Firefly/Serenity will remain the prefered choice. If they can bring it to the masses more (need series to be shown on terristerial tv or SkyOne etc to bring it to mainstream in britain) then it will get more and more numbers.
But you know, when Joss is involved you will get something special, hence the second it was released on DVD i had my copy.

I'd be suprised if there is another firefly film, at least not from a major studio, it's had ok DVD sales, but it lost a shedload of money at the boxoffice and that's never a good thing. Although that said isn't Joss tied up writing and directing a film at the moment after he resigned from Wonderwoman.

Firefly was a really good series (still need to see the last few episodes tho), however the film tried to cram too much in to answer all the questions for the fans of the series, this made it not that good a film for the average person watching it. And Star Wars isn't just because it was first, it is still better (the original 3 ofc) than the Sci-Fi stuff being produced today, part of the reason is that everything seems to copy it is some way or another.
