Does anyone know the maximum length cable you can run from an ISDN socket to a card? I have about 20 meters of cable, but can't connect.

If I move the PC next to the ISDN box it connects fine :)

I have checked the cabling, and all is OK on this side.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The maximum length of an ISDN cable depends on the operating mode. The operating mode is selected with the dip-switches in the NTBA-box.

150m
Normally, the S0 is used as a passive bus, i.e. up to eight appliances can be connected. The maximum length then is 150 meter. Maximum four of the connected machines can use the supplied power (40V).

1000m
In point-to-point mode only one single appliance is connected. The bus length increases to 1000m.

500m
The wide bus. Between the first and last ISDN appliance the distance can be at most 30m. The bus length amounts to 500m.

I think that it may not be the length of the cable that creates your problem. It's generally a bad idea to have cables be rolled up [yet active] and/or pass sources of electrostatic energy. It may be that you're just on borderline signal specs, but it should work really [I think]

When I originally had ISDN installed at my old place, I needed around 15m of cable to connect the upstairs PC, I got hold of some heavy duty CAT5 cable and it worked fine.

If you are using that cheapo CAT5 stuff then maybe that could be your problem, I've got problems using it for a LAN right now.

BT didn't like the distance, they offered to put in an ISDN extension socket, for £130 of course :)

well, there's these gizmos that you plug the cable into and they measure it for you but I suspect that you might not be able to lay your hands on one :(
I think your best bet would be to take the cable to an electronics store and have them check it. otherwise I wouldn't know. sorry.

heh, just spoken to our network guys, they lending me a fluke!

will test the cable tonight with that, and run it through the network and test it with the laptop to test sinal strength.

ISDN length shouldn't be a problem, as there is only another 30 meters of cable to the exchange! (is directly opposite my house :))

Not usre on the qualit of the cable, got from maplins, so prolly shite, although we are using it for the LAN, and we have no problems with that (same distances).

Cheers guys.

Well done, though I suspect the cable you bought from Maplins would have worked fine as a cross-over cable :D
