ISDN probs!

Hi there,

I recently got ISDN and thought I had left the lagless days of my 56k behind but I was wrong.........On an empty BW server I can have a nice ping of 80 but 10 minutes later when there are 15 others on it, it can be 300+. Other ISDN peeps pings just don't seem to get so fecked up as mine. They might go up by 60ms but they are a lot more stable than poor old mine :( Sometimes I am playing on a full server and my ping is 100 one minute and them 300 the next! But I have played with a 300 ping on my 56k before and there was never such a long weapons delay etc.

I have a lasat speed basic which I paid £50 for so I don't really want to buy another. If this like the worst modem ever and will getting an Asus solve all my probs?.........

I dont suppose there is a magic setting I can click to get me a decent stable ping in large games? LOL

Tx for reading and yes I am a newbie!

that should tell u the answer i.e go back to the same server on a different isp.
good luck :)

When I had ISDN I found that two things mainly made for a low, stable ping: a decent card (Asuscom as already mentioned), and a decent connection. I used to use the Barrysworld dial-up (two hops to the game) and sometime had a ping as low as 20ish!
These days though with ADSL and cable modems becoming more widely available, ISDN is really a bit of an expensive option.

Check outUpset Chaps Connection Guide for details on ISDN settings.

Using Freeserve Anytime I had an average ping of 80-100. Pretty poor. Using Net in a Nutshell, its down to 30-70. So your isp makes a big difference.

Theirs a limit with ISDN, as to how many players on a server, it can cope with. Especially if their cable or ADSL and spamming plasma.

hmmm , my ping is regularly below 50 m8 dont give up.i use 08002go.com btw,tho at off peak times i use good ol' bt and still mostly is ok,on bw q2dm1 my ping is often about 35!
on cs prolly more like 50 -80 tho.
rev how u getting on with adsl? i'm told it is more expensive than isdn, and for pings prolly not much better, tho i cant speak from experience obviously.i do realise it downloads lots quicker, tho except at bloody c.s. update times that would not be much of an issue for me:)
my phone bill for my entire house is about 40 quid a month, that includes all line rentals and ALL phone calls, not just net calls.i also pay 15 for good ol' bt anytime tho.

Apart from a few disconnections (BT's maintenance apparently), it's been fine. Pings to Barrysworld servers are a little higher but generally it's lower elsewhere - 40ish. Cost, apart from the set-up charge, is currently £49.96/month (that's with the VAT) plus the line rental. With ISDN I was paying about £100/month so it's working out cheaper for me with the obvious benefit of continuous connection (meaning I can run servers  ) and faster downloads.

They hate cars in Brighton and they spend all my council tax on making it as difficult as possible for cars. I'm not going to say any more because it MAKES MY BLOOD BOIL just thinking about it.

P.S. Why doesn't the colour mark-up work?

hmmmm

/me looks

Hmmm, not sure really. The new BiSDN service (Broadband iSDN) allows iSDN to carry well over 2mbit, and that's being classed as broadband. Does that mean iSDN Pri is not broadband? Not sure, but personally I wouldn't

OK, thought: iSDN can do over 10mbit... (with dozens of bonded single 64k channels). You could bond together hundreds of 33.6 modems to make 10mbit, but that doesn't make it broadband.

The medium itself is capable of carrying 64k on a single channel. Cable/DSL/etc can carry mbits in single channels.

:. iSDN is not broadband :D

(Thanks Toast for the lateral thinkin ;))

and BTW I have Telewaest/Eurobell ISDN and using their dial-in I ping 25-50 ish on Jolt and Barrysworld servers with no lag at all.

Benefits of ISDN over ADSL is no Packet Loss, However I am sick of Telewest's support of their services for EX Eurobell customers so I bit the bullet and had a BT line installed and Free ADSL Installation after the 1st October

I live in Crawley too, though I have BT ADSL.

I spoke to a technical lady at Eurobell recently and she told me that, as Eurobell are now part of Telewest, they will be rolling out cable internet access pretty soon (she didn't specify a date though).

I'm all cabled up and I'll have a good look at it as soon as it arrives.

wow 3 ppl in crawley that can operate computers? more than i thought lol
i spoke to a different "technical" woman at eurobell, who said sometime in 2002 ffs.for that reason i cancelled my eurobell phone and got bt back, for isdn tho,not dsl.
methinks eurobell have no idea what they're talking about im afraid :(

I agree with that sentiment! I had a fault on my cable phone, and depite a dozen phonecalls, nothing was done about it. I cancelled, and lo and behold, 3 engineers turned up a week later to fix the fault (makes BT look pretty good by comparison).

Here's an extract from a follow-up email from Eurobell:

>>
We are also looking to bring Telewests' Blueyonder Internet Services in the near future. This will bring high speed Internet access to our customers.

Whilst I can not give you a date for the roll out of these services, I can assure you that once more details become available an announcement will be forthcoming.

You using Home Highway? .. if so that is just BT. BT are the worst ISP for gaming. You could always dial into another ISP and 99% of your problems will disappear ;) Gotta pay for those calls then though :(

Telewest / Eurobell have been saying that exact same thing to me for the last 2 years. They have to dig up and replace all the cables in Crawley before they can provide Blue Yonder as Eurobell only had single routes to all the houses and never upgraded because they new they were being sold off.
