ISDN ping over 500

Please help.

When I connect through my ISP (BarrysWorld), my ping avg 500-600 on an ISDN connection, however when I ping the games server through GamesSpy, it shows a ping of 180.

I have played around with the following parameters set on my Q3A setup, but the system is still slow.

RATE: 3000 - 10000
COMM_MAXFPS:
SNAPS: 5 - 85
CL_MAXPACKETS: 15 - 45

I've set CG_DRAWDPS to 1 and network graphs are as follows:

Top Graph: Shows a lot of yellow and small amounts of blue.
Bottom Graph: Show a lot of Green.

The only way to the lower the ping is to set SNAPS = 5. When this is set the top graph shows a lot less yellow and the ping drops down to 300-400.

I have a AMD Athlon 750, TNT2 with 32MB graphics card, 128 MB RAM.

Thanks.

Which server? Do you get the same if you play on a BarrysWorld server..?

Do you use an external TA?

I've tried serveral BW servers. I've played FFA and Q3F servers.

I have an external ISND. A BT Ignition Pro.

External ISDN TA connected to a standard serial port will ping higher than an internal ISA/PCI card. You can change a few COM port and DUN settings to help however.

Raise your COM port baud to at least 115200, enable hardware flow control and RTS/CTS. Increase the FIFO buffers for the COM port to maximum and enable software compression under server types in the dial up.

If you're unsure on how to change those settings then see the 'step by step' Optimize COM Port for External Modem or External ISDN Device and Optimizing an External ISDN Terminal Adapter based Dial-Up sections that relate to your operating system in the guide at http://www.savageuk.com/ucconnectionguide/

TBH if it is because its an external ISDN device then you should just spend £40 to get an internal Asus PCI card since they're one of the fastest.

I've set the connection speed to 115K. But there is no difference.

I've run a background DOS process to ping the games server using "ping <IP Address> -l". This gives me a steady rate of about 150.

I then load up Q3A and connect to the same site. When I start the game my ping still averages about 400. I then exited out of Q3A and switched over to DOS, where the results are still showing an average ping of 150. I'm at a loss.

All that I can say is if I drop SNAPS beneath 10 I get a ping of about 300 (best I get), if I raise it above 9 then the FPS drops to about 10 - 15 and my ping shoots back up to 400-500 (even higher sometiimes ).

Does it have anything to do with my graphics card? I have a TNT2 Model 64 Pro with 32MB (even though the games plays fine offline).

Thanks

The reason you get a better ping using the Ping feature is because it may not be sending the same amount of data.

I doubt your gfx would have any thing to do with it.

I've sorted it!!!

Basically I connected my external TA to my PC via USB (cause I thought it was faster than the serial port). I've just changed that to the serial port and hey presto, I'm pinging away in the 80's.

What a result!

There you go :)
USB is a large CPU hog, since its entirely software driven, the hardware is just the physical link to your ISDN box thing. Serial should certainly be better while playing things like q3. Really, i'd advise anyone to go and spend 30 quid on an internal asuscom isdn card. I ping 30-40 on it on free connections, and even better on BW. Makes the difference. Certainly worth it.

80 is certainly a lot better then 400 tho, glad ya sorted it ;)
