wow beautiful castle in the transilvania bit, though couldnt read up on the history as was all in transilvanian <slaps head> but the pictures were lovely, bit of a disapointment was hoping it would be dark with lightening and folks running about with flaming torches and pitch forks but thats life

Ooh, went to Romania bout bout 20 yrs ago, Causceau had just banned discos when we got to the hotel, goddam amazing place.
just a little held back by a dictator to say the least, changed 80 quid into local money , some dodgy guy who was hiding from the secret police, a week later we were using it to make paper aeroplanes.
Beautiful countryside, but the population had nothing, I mean they saved all the blown up ballons we brought over for a last day party, cos they couldnt buy them anywhere themselves, some of the people on our trip brought aspirins and tampons!!! for presents.
Romanias come a long way since, what was funny the locals treated us as decadent westerners..until they got to know us, then the barriers dropped and we got on great...like to think we did our little bit to stir the revolution
To give an idea what it was like then, our plane landed at a military airport, and was met by soldiors holding machineguns, there were actually guards manning conning towers and they had the huge guns pointed at us as we walked to the terminal, every street corner had a machine gun totting guard, you were NOT allowed an pictures, there were 2 colours of clothing grey and brown, our flourescent skiing jackets attracted crowds.
1 supermarket we visited had 2 items tomatoes and fish heads, there was a shop and all it had was 20 jars of the same jam on sale.
I'm not making any of this up, it really was a police state.
Love to go back to see the changes.
