Piece of music by John Cage entitled: 4'33"

The premiere of the three-movement 4′33″ was given by David Tudor on August 29, 1952 as part of a recital of contemporary piano music. The audience saw him sit at the piano and, to mark the beginning of the piece, close the keyboard lid. Some time later he opened it briefly, to mark the end of the first movement. This process was repeated for the second and third movements. The piece had passed without a note being played—in fact without Tudor (or anyone else) having made any deliberate sound as part of the piece. Only then could the audience recognize what Cage insisted upon, that “There is no such thing as silence. Something is always happening that makes a sound."

john cage is a really interesting guy. a little bit obtuse to really be considered art, but it is a fairly interesting point to make and done in a nice way, hardly pretentious in the grand scheme of things though.

It is bullshit, just like most modern art sadly.

Sorry but its bullshit, weakly disguised as art by people laughing their socks of in private at just how gullable 'art lovers' really are to pay for anything.

And the delluded snobs that defend contemporary art just come back with the same old accusations of calling us all "philistines" because we see things for what they are.

Art to me requires talent and vision, this is another prime example of having neither.

contemporary art is the refuge of the truely talentless.

why does this require no 'talent and vision'? art, at it's base level is purely an idea which is then produced using whatever medium the artist desires. in this case the idea is just more important than the medium.

i refute that you could possibly say there is no vision involved with this. talent, well, it depends on your deffinition - but john cage is actually one of the most brilliant composers i've ever heard. some (if not the majority) of the most celebrated and lauded artwork in the world - take andy warhol's involvement in pop-art for example - came from people with no formal training and little talent. thus, the ideas are the most important things - and whether you agree or not, this piece is an original and thought-provoking idea.

It's art, sure, as much as anything is art.

Art is not, afterall, restricted to paintings on walls or some hippie with a flower quoting karl marx on a toilet. Not you echome.

It does make the point it intends, but could've achieved it faster.

You can't define what is and isn't art, it speaks to different people in different ways. If you try to you end up the one looking like a snob.

Kinda what Azurus said, art is very individual and there is no crap art as long as one person says "Well i like it" :D

I think i'd fall asleep if one of those contemp guys started going on about the sound of silence.

I think i'd be wishing for it tbh.

agreed with azurus. if you seriously feel that what you have created is something you want an audiance (be it slim or broad) to notice, then you have created a piece of art.

that could be the art in the piece - you never really know. if you feel thats what the piece tells you, then it probably is for you.

Nah, if I wanted to watch a bunch of tools watching something pointless I would go a football match, that isn't art either btw. :p
