hi all
im going 2 build a new pc 4 my self soon ish and was looking 4 your views on using the following and build up from there ....

AMD Athlon XP 2200 on a Abit AT7-MAX2 M/B .....now from the review
http://www.abit.com.tw/abitweb/webj...PRODUCT_TYPE=MotherBoard&pMODEL_NAME=AT7-MAX2

it said that only 2 slots at a time may be used with DDR300/400 RAM ........so would it b better 2 have say 2 or 4 sticks of 256 ram ?? and then the raid ........would 2 40 Gig Maxtor 7200rpm ATA 133 MHz ok 2 use as my raid drive???

so whats your views on the above then ??

dude, do you think you will be needing so much ram? I'd argue that 512Mb will suit you just fine. you could take the money you save on ram and use that to get the maxtor drives with the large 8Mb cache [instead of the regular ones]

8Mb cache ........cool might have 2 search that out then;)
on a side note i do a lot of video editing .......thats why im thinking using 1gig of ram .... more ram should be faster ??
im confused :(

hmm even so, even so. I suppose you know what your average ram-usage is. I'd go for the yummy drives though. Never seen cause to go above 512Mb on a workstation myself.

I myself would be more prone for the following:

Epox - 8K5A2+ Motherboard KT333
(DDR 2700 compatible, HPT374 IDE RAID and ATA133 IDE)
Athlon XP 2200 with 512 DDR (2700)
Firewire PCI card (or Video editing suite PCI)

only time i've seen a gig of memory being used is in servers, doing high-end work (sql databases and the like)
in reality it would be far better to invest in the faster drives than the memory, especially considering if your doing a lot of video editing being able to write the information to disk at over 30fps is a good consideration!

the Epox board I picked is due to two reasons, the stability of Epox, and its ability to overclock really well :D

match it with a Geforce4 TI4200 (or a TI4600 if you really want) and you can have a steaming gaming rig :)

I'd go for the nForce2 - they're out there now, albeit in limited numbers... the MCP-T soundstorm APU is an awesome chip - better than 99% of consumer add-in soundcards and the DDR400 is rock solid stable in one, two or three DIMMS, with two you get the added bonus of discrete 64-bit address ranges per stick (providing they're of the same type and size).
