Yes, Christmas with the "in-laws" is a massive big deal.
It means that they've accepted that you're a part of their family.

It took my folks nearly 4 years to invite my gf to stay for Christmas. It might also have had something to do with a 6 month old grand-daughter as well.

Depends on family. To some it's, as said, a full welcome to family(try getting out now b*tch! ), to some it's just a "Oh yeah, maybe that wanker should come too".
