/facepalm doesn't quite cover it. Nothing surprises me from Blizzard these days though.

best part of it is you can just rip them yourself and stick them all together in windows movie maker... unless he's on about removing them from games and forcing people to pay for them in which case he's about to lose alot of money.

Cutscenes glued together - yeh, stupid idea, for quite a lot of reasons. But...

What would be possible would be to join all the cut scenes together with extra footage to turn them into a coherent movie. If considered like that, its not such a stupid idea.

If you think about it, the cost to jump from cutscenes to feature length movie in that case is relatively small and then you can give it a separate release from the game.

The trick would be to make it coherent and interesting - cutscenes are just that: little slices of the story. They don't tell the full story. The action takes place usually outside of cutscenes and in the game itself when you're playing. That means potentially the hardest parts to animate are outside of the cutscenes (yes, I know you occasionally get the awesomeness like the duel between Kerrigan and Zeratul in Starcraft 2 but that is very rare).

Not quite as stupid as it first sounds depending on how much accurate info is filtering through from the news report but yeh, one that is going to get backs up. Possibly from a PR point of view alone its not worth doing without discounting it big time to people who already own the games.

Where this all falls down though is in 2 things:

1) The animation quality in cutscenes just isn't good enough. There are I think only 2 or 3 cut scenes in the whole of Starcraft 2 with great animation. The rest have fairly wooden animation. In Starcraft 2, there isn't even consistency of animation. Something that has been shown to not work in the past is where a movie does not have consisten quality of animation. Look at the old Lord of the Rings animated version. Ralph Bakshi was brave and daring with what he tried but the end result is a bit of a mess. Uneven quality of animation makes it look a bit trashy. And so it would be with any Cutscene-based movie.

2) Its integration with the game that makes the cutscenes engrossing. The cut scenes on their own for the most part just aren't good enough theatre. Cutscenes only enhance your immersion, they don't bring immersion all by themselves. For full blown movies they have to be capable of immersing you without anything else to assist.

Worth getting if you only have a pirate copy of the game with all the cut scenes deleted. Maybe thats the new target market :D
