Well, wrong forum(ish).. but I *think* the way to see fps in q3 is pull down the console (` key, under escape) and type in cl_drawfps 1

I think. 's been a while.

there's also a little something called vsync, where screen output is indeed linked to refreshrate. the diverse windows have different ways of turning this off, but you'd might want to look at the settings tab of your desktop properties.

also in Q3 you can also type "com_maxfps 9999999" to remove the normal max 80fps limit.

Hello

As far as I recall, using the cg_drawfps 1 command will display the FPS as constantly updated in 'real time' every fraction of a second. As you and your opponents are constantly moving around the level and the scenes you are viewing are constantly changing, this means you won't have just one fixed framerate, it will undoubtedly vary and, as you comment, 'flicker' between a range of values. This is perfectly normal.

To view your average framerate, you can use one of the demos that ships with the game . . .
  1. Start Quake III Arena.
  2. Bring down the console with the tilde (~) key.
  3. Type 'timedemo 1' and hit enter.
  4. If you're running version 1.17 or below, now type 'demo demo001' and hit enter. If you're running version 1.27 or above, type 'demo demo127' instead and hit enter.
  5. A pre-recorded demo will now play, probably at a much faster speed than normal. Once the demo has finished, simply bring down the console again and an average FPS reading for the whole demo will be shown.
There are lots of demos on the net which are designed to test your system under various conditions, so if you wanted to test your setup further, you could just download one of these.

Kind Regards

VSync basically means that each frame is supposed to move at the same time as the monitor refreshes. Therefore it is capped. It means that you don't get "missed" frames if you move very quickly. It can, in some situations lead to a streaking effect if you switch it off.

I don't know about Quake 3 - but somewhere there will be Video/Graphics options and VSync will be an "On/Off" toggle.

However, it doesn't do you as much good unless you raise the refresh rate. Is 60Hz the max your monitor will do at the resolution you are running? If not, then you need to have a poke about in your graphics card set up (Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced) to see if you can change it. 60 Hz is not nice to your eyes.

If your're running Windows XP then you either need to hunt out one of the many tuning tools (I believe there is one called nvTweak if you have an nVidia card) to beat off the 60Hz OpenGL cap, or upgrade to Service Pack 1 which aparently fixes it.

I hope that helps.

Leave vsync on.

Otherwise you will get nasty shitty tearing.

Put your refresh rate up if possible.

If not then .. :/
