Is BT doing enough to improve your line?

I'm on a quest for the Holy Grail of online gaming, a low ping!

I'm currently trying to get BT to increase the gain on my line. But I want to know but how much BT can increase the gain? My mate has a stable gain of 4. Is this the maximum gain available or is there a higher level? Also is there any draw backs with having an excessively high gain?

Plus, is there anything else that BT can do to increase the quality of lines?

BT will only take it to 4, anything above that makes it bad for voice communication, or so they told me when i bullied them into changing mine

A few tips:
Get your gain increased, make sure no one picks up the other phones on the line (i.e. disconnect 'em), and er, get rid of the cordless, FM

Btw, anyone checked out ntl's site? http://www.ntl.com /
Cable modems are on their way, £40 per month will mean flat rate usage at 256-512k, depending on bandwidth sharing. A cable modem will set you back £150, and installation will cost £200, plus a monthly £10 charge to ntl (isp inc).
Does anyone know how this service compares with BT's ADSL, in terms of performance and cost?

Yeah Memski, thats right I phoned BT about my line. I was trying to bulshit alittle saying that I have a really crappy line and that I keep geting a cross wire. She asked if i had a cordless phone. I told that indeed I did, but said that the dodgy distant noise occured when the cordless phone is not even in use (I have two phones). Apparently the BT freestyle phones can be the cause the phantom noises, just by being pluged in! This was a total suprise to me, cos I was just initially just blagging!
The nice BT Op gave me a special helpline. The helpline Op confirmed what the first Op said. Her advise was to unplug the phone and let the battery drain. I still don't really understand why it should cause a problem! However the new spanky digital cordless phones do not suffer from this mysterious condition.
If there are any BT engineers that could explain this to me I would be grateful.

I've been speaking to BT about my dodge Internet connection. Cos, I seem to be able to get a fast connection speed when I take my comp round my m8's house. After a while I convinced him to up my gain to 5. I was told that this might cause an echoing effect and this could be counter productive. But, I haven't really noticed any difference at all.
Does anyone have any experience with a 5 gain? And should I keep the current setting or should I request it to be dropped back to 4?

I think it's how loud your phone line is set to. If it's louder, you get a clearer signal. But obviously, just like your stereo, if you turn up the input too loud, you get it distorted...so it needs to be set right. I think.

Aw, Split, you can come and live with me and Ith then. Now that I work for Telewest I get free cable TV and I only pay for my Phone calls.

=)

Splitter: I don't actually have noise on my line. I just thought I would suggest I did so that BT would feel sorry for me and give me ISDN for free.

Well we can all dream can't we!
