Completely misses the most important factor; the "military-industrial complex". The US fights wars because its industry is heavily biased towards military production and it needs to keep the whole show on the road.

There is an argument that Capitalism requires periodic war in order to expand its reach, to secure cheaper and more abundant raw materials, to secure cheaper labour, to open up new markets and to remove political opposition to those potential markets abroad. That is probably quite a harsh view, but it probably has an element of truth to it too.
