Is 2mbps downstream and 56kbps upstream any good for gaming?

My thoughts are that it isn't because of the 56kbps upstream but am I right?

Most of the data transferred is server-to-client so i don't think it will be a problem. 56k (7kb) does seem rather low for broadband however and there is a remote possibility that your client-to-server rate may need capping if you've got demon hardware..

Satellite access is likely to be useless for gaming primarily because of the lag time - if you've got sky digital you'll notice that bbc on the dish run slightly behind the terestrial channel.

Having said this its likely 10+ years before I get any kind of broadband access where I live so if these people are for real I'll be first to sign up.

Who's gonna be signing up for this service then? Registrations start either today at 4:00PM or tomorrow at 4:00PM, But the BIG question is will it be any good for gaming on BW?

Wether satillite internet is any good for gaming is debatable. It'l certainly have good bandwith (at least it should unless it wants to be a turkey), but TBH i don't think it has any real hope of competing with even ISDN in terms of reaction time.. (both use some form of EM radiation - which always goes at 3^8meters/sec ISTR - to transmit data, but the sattillites provide an exponentially longer round-trip for the data)..

56kbps upstream?

Isnt possible via modem atm. So how can they claim that one? Cos all info requests are done via modem and info sent to user via Satellite.

Looks like all a big hoax. And other companies aint exactly quaking in their boots. Enuf said

I presume you use either a client to their external servers, which then routes the info through your Satalite dish and somhow then recieves all incoming data through the dish, or the dish binds itself to your modem, causing them to work together in browsing/downloading etc.

dish = Card connected to dish.. blah.

Ne1 know how, cos their What Technology button aint up.

Still, im getting it cos it cant be that bad, and if i want to get rid of it quik.. ill use Gozilla to download ALL of Babylon-X.com then ill void my liscense and they will take it away

Or download a 2gb file of some type. by the time i get it i may have got myself one of these soon to be 0800 account jobbies..

Nice, but i need to be hpw for Q2 anyway so, you know, if the ping is WANK ill just connect normally using meh nice modem.

This seems quite good, I might sign up. The only points i don't like are;

14: You will not change the start page or modify any access. Changes and modifications will automatically lead to disconnection.

15: You utilize our advanced search engine in the first instance and with our partner search engines. (You can be rest assured that our partners are some of the largest and well-known Internet companies).

16: Downloading MP3 Files, Video files, Software and other large data and image files are ONLY ALLOWED if the content is based and available on our server(s) or the content-provider is a partner of the company (this is done for security and High-speed traffic).

That last ones a bummer! What if they don't have it on their server? Anyway its free, so i guess we've got nothing to grumble about. Plus that push email sounds good

err, just in case..

You can bet your bottom dollar that 80% of ppl that get that service will be ppl like us, as we are the only ppl that have heard of it, hence.. 5 million MP3, warez, VCD freaks with a 2mbps line, i dont think we will 'not' be leeching all day.

hard to take 5 million ppl off the service, they will just have to put up with it
