ok well ive been hearing a bit about IRC for a while and decided ill give it a whirl, downloaded it installed it bla bla but where do i go for the daoc chat? is there a prydwen/excalibur place? ta

for daoc channels - you need to connect to the quakenet.org server.

the channels are - #daoc.prydwen and #daoc.exc - i'm sure you can guess which is which.

not sure about the excal channel as i don't idle there, but the prydwen channel is +r which means you need a Q auth (Q is a bot... blabla i'm sure you'll pick it up). to get on /msg q hello and then follow the instructions.

after you've done all that go into your perform (options>irc>connect>perform or something similar..) and add the following:

/msg q@cserve.quakenet.org AUTH <yourusername> <yourpass>
/mode $me +x (this hides your hostmask in irc and hence lowers the risk of nasty people hacking you or w/e)
/join #daoc.prydwen
/join #therestofthechannelsyouwanttochatin

You can put multiple channels in a single join command btw:
/join #chan1,#chan2,#chan3,#etc
