I use irc fairly often but in light of all the recent hackings and all I decided it's probably best to get more info on how to prevent this from happening. IRC hackings is something thats mentioned a lot so I was wondering what can I do to prevent this? I already have a firewall program (Norton 2003) - I also notice that there is a firewall thingymajig in irc - what should I put in that to enable firewall on it? I'm a net n00b so any help is appreciated :) Thx in advance.

Btw already done the whole delete email with password/memorized pw so its not on comp anywhere business - so Im covered in that respect :).

Also the only person who plays this account and will never ever give my pw out to anyone so that isnt a issue either :D

1) don't accept DCC sends from someone unless you've explicitly asked them for a file (DCC lets you send files 'over irc' )

2) bounce your connection off another machine

3) don't piss people off on IRC

4) don't use the same IRC nick as in-game name

5) make sure you don't have any extraneous services running on your pc

6) make sure you haven't got any files or directories shared at all

7) make sure that if file sharing is installed on your pc it isn't bound to your TCP/IP connection that you use for 'net access

all depends on how paranoid you are tho :p

personally I cba to do anything.. if someone hacks my account and deletes everything it will just give me a good excuse to quit the game for good (which I should do but seem unable to :p )

It isn't that easy. It's a script (?) on the server (?) and I have no idea how to disable it. Besides, every time he checks his email at work he also checks what I'm doing on the internet. Would only get me in more trouble, but he only wants to block games and he doesn't care/know about IRC so I might be able to do that without his notice :p

either bounce off another machine which runs a bounce on a port which you can access (eg. 51 :p )

or go to a website which is running a java irc applet for that server (I don't know any offhand.. sorry :( )

Storm, the firewall setup in irc is to allow irc to work through a firewall on your machine, it's not a firewall in and of itself. :p

<hijack>

seriously, i wouldn't take that kinda crap from anyone, trying to sneakpeek at what i do when i'm online, checking what u do on the computer while he's at work <sheesh> that's taking it one step to far imo, had my parents done that to me (not that i was ever worried that they would, considering they hardly know what a computer is) i would have given them the abuse of the century :).

feel sorry for ya m8 =/

Vodka, you can most likely evade it by using a javaIRC client. Just search for IRC+quakenet (or whichever network you wish to connect to) on google, and you should find plenty of options. I personally wouldn't recommend auth'ing through these however.

Also, you'll be stuck with using the slash commands, so good thing to learn those first (if you don't know already ;) )

... else, what Amadon said - albeit, I'd recommend changing the ports allocated for DCC in mIRC, so you ain't using default at least.

Minor correction tho: DCC isn't going through the IRC network, it's a direct connection between the two machines involved, Amadon.

Nemue, presumable none of us knows his fathers reasons for monitoring his kids internet activities, so isn't it a bit ridiculous to come with judgements then?

well when you connect to an irc server you either type in
/server irc.quakenet.org 6667
irc.quakenet.org being the irc server
6667 being the port you wish to connect on

or you just select the server from a list and hit connect.. the latter makes your client perform the former essentially

you can set up a machine to redirect any data it receives on a certain port to another machine, so if you know someone who has an account on a machine hosted somewhere, he can run a little program to do this for you, and then when you want to connect to irc, you tell your irc client to connect to the bouncing machine on the relevant port rather than directly to the irc server

eg.
/server amadon.is.my.hero.org 31337
:p
(don't try that.. it won't work.. it's an example etc...)

I may not know the entire picture, but from what i've read daoc seem to be the sole reason, and monitoring anyone just to make sure they don't play a game is stepping way out of line imo, i know i would never ever put up with it had it happened to me.
