Does anyone know where i can download the full version of IE6? Im trying to find it for a friend but Microsofts website is so unbelievably shit that i cant find it. Im not even sure if those dicks let you get the full version anymore. So anyone any idea?
And you cant download 5.5 anymore. What if your using Windows 95? What then??

Thanks

When you've quite finished bashing Microsoft, you can find IE6 SP1 available to download here. This is a web-installer which will allow you to download only the components you require. You can also find the 'full' installer on virtually any PC magazine coverdisks.

For reference, you can still download IE5.5 SP2 even though it, along with Windows 95, is no longer officially supported. And in fairness, Windows 95 is over eight years old.

Kind Regards

Thanks.
I know that i can use the web installer thing but its painfully slow on a dialup. What i really need to do is download it and burn it to a cd.
I dont have any discs with it on and im not going to buy a magazine just because Microsoft are being twats again.

Could you point me in the direction of the 5.5 download? I cant seem to find it on thier webby. It seems to suggest that it is no longer available to download.

Sort it OUT

I suspect you'll need to look for the network install, I would look for you but the ms site genuinely annoys me as well.

I'm not even going to get into the whole Microsoft argument

Anyway, although Microsoft no doubt have the file somewhere, even though they're not supposed to, you should be able to download IE5 in full via this mirror. To be honest, though, I'd go for IE6 if you want a more secure experience on your Windows 98 machine.

Thankyou so much.

I know that ie 6 is more secure but they use the computer for browsing occasionally. I really dont want to wait around for 4 hours to download 6 on a dialup.

I just dont get why they dont have the full version available to download. It makes no sense to me. No network install or anything.

They don't have it because its defunct. Like windows 95. Live with it.

I mean they dont have a full install of 6 to download. Not just 5.5

Just because Windows 95 is old doesnt mean that nobody still uses it. Can you give me a good reason not to have it(5.5) available to download?

Microsoft's reasoning is two-fold. First, they no longer support the product and, as such, they don't want people to be able to access it and then be able to generate erroneous support requests. The second reason is purely that a newer version is available that they want to promote. Just like it's extremely hard to purchase older versions of Windows because Microsoft wants to deploy its latest work, so too is it hard to download older versions of IE when newer versions exist. Yes, it's poor, the logic is flawed and the idea has its problems, but this is Microsoft :(

As for downloading IE6 in full, Knowledge Base article Q257249 gives some hints, but they're for Windows 2000 / WIndows XP.
  1. Download the IE6 web installer but do not execute it straight away
  2. Click Start > Run
  3. Browse and find the IE6 setup file
  4. At the end of the path, add the following . . .
    Code:
    /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"""
The final command line should look like . . .
    Code:
    "C:\Some Downloads Folder\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"""
  5. Run the program :)
Oh well

Kind Regards

Thanks for the offer and the help but no need to upload it. Ill find a cover disk from work with it on. I just wanted to get it sorted this weekend.
Ill give the full download thing a try, it may work. Or maybe ill just give them Opera instead.

Its things like this that have made me stop buying Microsoft products at work. I just hope people continue to move away from MS products, maybe they will realise.

Consider what kind of user they are before you force an alternative browser on them. Opera is very patchy in places, and in my experience really isn't an "IE Replacement" on all fronts yet. Just as Linux isn't a "Windows Replacement" for everyone (e.g. Mr Pc World type user).

Mozilla will get some disagreement from some poeple, but I think it is the strongest alternative browser - certainly version 1.3+ A bit memory heavy yes, but features are very good. I do now use it as my main browser and haven't touched IE for a long time.

I guess Netscape might be a consideration, but I'm unaware of what they actually "add" that makes it preferable over Mozlla?

To translate that into something we can all understand, Mr Da Bass is recommending the use of the very fine Mozilla browser, Phoenix, which has been renamed Mozilla Firebird for legal reasons. The 0.6 release is due for some time next week.

Once Mozilla 1.4 is out, Firebird will be renamed the Mozilla Browser, and instead of a huge bloated package, you will get small neat apps, including the rather cute Minotaur mail client.

Thanks Will, I think we all needed that translation :D Just for reference, here's the word from the horse's mouth, so to speak . . .

Mozilla Branding [Source]
3. When referring to Thunderbird or Firebird before or during the 1.4 release cycle, make sure to use the project name with Mozilla pre-pended as "Mozilla Thunderbird" or "Mozilla Firebird" instead of Mozilla alone or Firebird/Thunderbird alone.
4. Use the names "Mozilla Browser" and "Mozilla Mail" to describe the Firebird and Thunderbird projects after the 1.4 release.
Kind Regards

lol! If he didn't have problems before, he would then! :D Okay, joking aside, this thread is going way astray, and Microsoft and Linux just don't mix without jokes and/or insults, which I'm sure no-one wants.

Linux would work perfectly(as it always does :p) for what they need but all i want to do is give them an updated IE.

Is Firebird worth trying? I tried the first release of Phoenix and quite liked it. But couldnt get it to install when i tried it again.
Ive been put off Mozilla, it seemed really slow when i tried 1.0

Mozilla 1.3.1 is latest stable release of the browser suite. It is still quite 'substantial' but you should find many things have improved since 1.0. You can download Phoenix 0.5 from the links in the new Firebird page. It, as you rightly say, is very much different to Mozilla in terms of the resources it requires and in terms of the features it offers.

Mozilla gets the "best browser ever" rating from me, but since 0.6 is out very soon, you should maybe hold out for that.
