personally I think that if you split it into business, general and gaming, the general and gaming will be alright, but the business will be 1/2 business, and 1/2 porn.

The internet is uncontrollable and ever expanding, do you have any idea how hard that makes it to split?

it's like saying "the government decided today that the road network will be split into 2. Commuters, and Personal drivers"

heh heh

Its a shite idea, anyhow.

When IPv6 is out and slowly rolled out through the ISP's there will be 2 internets because it would be madness to bridge them automatically, by choice yes, not automatically.

I've read something about it some where before but I think the general idea was to revise various parts of the cureent internet.

1. I'm not a yank. Born in Balham SW12 actually :)
2. I just thought it through for a minuite, I'd not seen it covered anywhere else.

Why is it impossible?

If yopu don't know/realise why it's impossible, I really can't be arsed to elaborate in too much depth.

The "internet" so to speak is a shared entity. It's exactly like a road network. It's not something you can start saying "ok, all home user packets go this way, all business user packets go that way". Packets take the shortest available route from source A to destination B.

This is in ultra-layman terms, but should hopefully outline the basic issue.

I remember reading about an "Internet 2" ages ago in .net magazine (when it was halfway decent), where the idea was basically to have a network to cater for multimedia, rather than text-only, which is what the Internet was created for originally, i.e. to send text-based email and communicate during wartime conflicts, so that if one part of the net was taken down, it could still send information. Of course, the original designers of the net didn't envisage it being used for everything it is now, therefore the idea of creating a net that could cater for larger amounts of data. Or something. ;)

It's patently obvious that the net is creaking under the pressure of all the ever-increasing traffic, and if something isn't done soon, god knows what'll happen.

Lol. Bad analogy. The road network could be changed if needed. Toll roads coming soon etc. The US has priorty lanes for paying customers. Not that hard, just a lot of education needed for the drivers.

The internet as it stands is based on the TCP/IP protocol format. With the need for IP6 there will be a major change to the way IP packets are constructed, mainly due to the addition of address octects which will give billions of IP numbers. The same way that IPX and TCP/IP can co-exist on a lan, 2 different IP structures could co-exist through the same copper and fibre network that is in place. It's just a matter of non conflicting hardware and huge investment from the ISP's.

Conversely. With terra bit ethernet in production for ISP's the capacity of the existing internet will grow and will be able to stand current growth for quite a while. The cost is coming down for long fibre runs and development of aDSL across domestic copper will mean that the consumers of the net will drive it all forward.

lol @ the newbie insinuation.

Luap.

/me just noticed. 200th post :D

congrats m8 :D

as you say tho, it is not very hard to implement a construction within the TCP/IP headers to flag routes [akin to the TLD structure perhaps: a commercial or business flag, edu-flags home-user flags etc.etc.]

There was a plan for an 'internet 2' a few years back. It crashed and burned.

There are some screwed up sites on the net which are set up simply in order to con others, Ol' BeelzeBub probably came across one of those...
