Indeed.. but not really anything new. The debate about the price of games is an old one...

Software pirates (and the buyers/users (since a lot of pirate stuff isn't purchased at all) of such software) use the price of games (and software in general) to justify engaging in what is, indisputably, illegal activities... "if they were cheaper, we wouldn't pirate" they say

Software retailers/publishers use pirating as and excuse to justify the price of games... "if you didn't steal from us, we'd be able to make games cheaper" they say.

I don't believe either side, tbh.

They're killing their own industry - tis stupid.

The amiga was a good case: they said "Games are this price because of piracy, when CD games come out we'll drop the price!"

(this was long before CD-copiers were dime-a-dozen)

So naturally when the CD versions of games came out... they were a fiver more than the disk ones.

Marvellous.

Sicko, I loved my little miggy too, but I wouldnt say it died because of piracy. I would say it died because of consoles and poor management by Commodore. Also they lost out on the business market because of the advent of PC's.

They didnt fit a niche and they were not unique, Mac's do GFX, consoles do games, PC's do business type things .. Also Commodores crappy effort at making a console, AKA CD32 finally broke them.

I was that || close to buy a CD32 then... *coughs* Glad, I didn't.

Remember Turrican? The cool, fantastic action shooter everyone played? Publisher only sold about 2k games... rest was warez. :(

I loved my Amiga. Defender of the Crown for me :)

Think it died cause of PC's really. I lost interest in my Amiga soon after I saw DOOM.

But... believe me or not... they are comming back :)

Heh, aye I heard a few things on /. but they will never come back as a commercially viable system.

Dungeon Master 2, UFO: Enemy Unknown, FRONTIER ELITE!! .. *sigh* those were the days.

Turrican only sold 2000 copies? Naaah I dont believe that, why did they make Turrican 2 then? I admit, I used to play loads of pirated Amiga games, but then when your 10 - 15 its pretty hard to find £30 to buy a new game every week. My limit was usually buy a legit game every 1 - 2 months.

My favorite C64 game must have been Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken(sp).

I never played Day of the Tentacle, though. Don't ask me why.

And the Turrican thing was an understatement, of course. They sold more than 2k copies... but for every original Turrican there were 10-15 pirated copies out.
Heck, I am not saying that I never had any cracked Amiga games.
But even as a kid I managed to scrounge up enough money every month to get a full prize game.

Turrican was great fun, too... *sighs*
