Unless you're American, in which case this was last month. And of course its really 01:02:03 04/05/2006, which is much less interesting...

If you're going to quibble over formatting, you might as well point out that it's all basically arbitrary and meaningless anyhow.

Also, even my American friends don't seem to know why they write it that way round. Is there any logic to mm/dd/yy, at all?

Only reason I find that format to be useful is for naming files by date in a directory :p

Yeah, if you think how some people (including me) explain a date

"It's May the Third today"

Someone told me the American system was simply based on how the date is spoken; e.g. "May the fourth 2006" whereas we use the international date convention; it's yet another one of those archaic conventions Americans stuck to after they split from the Mother Country. Of course the 'proper' date convention is the ISO version which is year-month-day e.g. 2006-05-04.

See, I think I'd naturally just say "the third of May" anyhow. And yeah, the values are arbitrary and meaningless but they're still values, and You Don't Tamper With Math. Ascending or descending are the only orders that make sense, dammit.

Hardly American.

I work for the government, and we all use the dd/mm/yy format in all dates.

That's the BRITISH GOVERNMENT btw.
