Whats the best surface to use? only one ive got thats any good at the moment is my desk...
and also, is there a program like ps/2 rate that increases the refresh rate on the usb port my mouse is plugged into, or will it already be maxed out?

cheers Splitter.

1) I use an Everglide mat - a bit on the thick side but I like it.

2) You don't really need to "'clock" the USB after all .. how friggin' fast you expecting to move that mouse :)

why get a MS mouse ?

its like buying a car made by microsoft, 5 minutes after your start driving, youll crash. Anyway,

1. Allsop mouse mat, very good.
2. not sure about usb updaterate, i think theres somming in the latest logitech drivers that has a rate changer, dont know weather it works for usb.

The best surface to use is a peice glass the size of a mouse mat. Its easy to clean and the mouse feels great on it.

I use mine without a mat. It works fine on my wooden desktop.

Right, to get the best surface for an intellieye, u either want a white piece of paper (which i find slips around my desk too much), or a good fabric matt, that doesn't reflect light. Anything shiny can throw the mouse off on fast movements causing that spinning effect many people find. I've been using a Sun Microsystems matt for months now and I have absolutely zero problems with my intellieye.

I used to use a cloth mat with my intellieye, but I found the moevemnts needed for fine aiming (yes belive it or not I try to aim :)) were a bit 'sticky' after a while.

I recently went over to using an Everglide giganta. Tracks well and the mouse is very free and 'slippery' when moving on the surface.

The refresh rate is already high because it's USB, and I've tried various different mats with mine and a fabric one seems to be best (I'm using a Sun mat as well, probably same as Meatballs :))

wooden desk for me and my opti intelli.

No need to update the rate on USB. that would be like adding a alloy valve caps to the tires of your ferrari in the blind hope it may go faster.

One major gripe about the optical mice tho...regardless of how high the refresh rate of USB is...I run at 1600x1200 res or higher...so when I play CS at 1024 res, the mouse resoloution becomes really shitty.

It's like the cursor/crosshair is stuck on a 20x20 pixel grid, meaning I can't aim where i want to...just "as near as possible"

Pain in the arse, I can tell ya

Tryed decreasing your sensitivity to something nice n low?

I can't mate, I use max sensitivity in CS (and Q2, when I used to play that)...

Only option left is to get a good old fashioned ball mouse, but a USB one...still means I'll have to clean the freeking rollers every few days, which is the main reason I went optical in the first place.

Go and find a big cardboard box, a nice piece of velvet, scissors and blu-tak. Cut the flattest, biggest bit of the box out and wrap the cloth round it with blu-tak. Sorted.

Cardboard is nice and warm under hoof and velvet is too sexy to fondle - you can make it any size or shape you like children.

As Flametop mentioned, a hard surface is better for accurate tracking, though this method works fine if you have the material taut enough.

don't bother messing with your mouse rates as I tried something similar and ended up in pain

I got an intellimouse for christmas and it is very cool, not like all of microsofts other gimmics.

Anyway as for mat, anything fabric with a pattern and you will be golden. I have 2 Mats 1 is a Tazmania mat and the other is a load of bubbles (both fabric) and they both work great.

I tried it with a glossy mat and it kind of seemed a bit unreliable. Probs because it reflets the light as mentioned above. The bst thing about it is that it works on my trousers which means i can do work with my laptop without a desk.

Well I've just bought the MS Intelli optical(bah, lack of decent ball mice around :( ) and also bought an Allsop mousemat wih it.I'd say no.To me they just don't seem to have the right mix that a ball mouse and fabric mat do.I use a lowish sens and the fabric mat seems to offer too much resistance for my liking.
I got a free mousemat with a PC mag not long back, which has a plastic coating, and seems to play a lot better than the Allsop,so I'd go for similar,or the everglide.

Well, as you all very probably heard about the recent scientific success int he states. Where they strapped electrodes to a brain of a monkey, and in turn, the monkey was able to move a robotic arm about by just thinking.

I'm on the alpha testing team for the human -> pc version.

I just strap electrodes to my head and I just think "shoot him"....and viola, dead enemy...

...errrrm...there's somebody knocking at my door? and barking dogs? shit...what's with the blue flashing lig....

Actually, screw that. I'm getting a touch screen LCD monitor...then I can just point at the screen and frag everyone. Yeah...that's the future. Point-n-Frag
