Installing Quake2 onto Windows ME

A mate can't get Quake2 installed on to ME and wondered if it was just his setup (WinME installed over Win98) that was the problem or if it's a documented one.
Does a clean install of your OS solve this or is it something else?
He desperately needs to play AQ ... quick!

Hmm I dont know what it is but its definitely not his setup cos I installed ME that way and I have Q2 find and dandy.
