Installing Geforce 4 MX440

Help, advice appreciated please:

1. Just bought an MSI GeForce 4 MX440. Currently
have a TNT2 Ultra fitted in a 500Mhz Athlon (sorry,
forgot to find out Motherboard make again).
Do I need to un-install the old card / drivers
before putting the new card in place ?

2. Aforementioned PC is extremely 'fluffy' inside.
Anybody know any good ways of cleaning without
taking the whole thing to bits ? Compressed air or
something ? Have previously used cotton buds and vodka
but I guess this is not very professional (and a waste
of vodka).

Thanks.

1.) Uninstall the nVidia drivers as described at www.geforcefaq.com then set the display adapter to standard VGA. Then swap the card, boot up, then install the latest nVidia drivers.

2.) Dunno. Blow hard.

1) What he said.

2) Blow hard, and a bit of unscrewing. But then again, is there any problems that would mean you need to clean it? And that was a waste of vodka.;)

Thanks for the assistance. Wow lot of stuff
on that FAQ !

As regards the cleaning I was particularly
concerned about the strange variable
wharbling noise from the main fan at the back
of the case.

I tried blowing hard but after a while I just
felt dizzy and sick, then I started sneezing
alot.

Those cans of compressed air have always done the job for me. When I'm not putting it up someone's nose and using it for the purpose for which it was designed, it works wonders. :)

Well the deed is done.

I have the GeForce 4 MX440 in and running and
its very....nice.
Have to say it's not quite the revolutionary step
I was hoping for but that's more likely down to
the rest of my set up.

Wolfenstein with detail looks a lot better than
with everything turned off and I now get around 70fps
running CS at 1024x768 vs the 30-40fps I used to get.
Looking forward to re-starting MOH with detail turned
up.

Can't seem to adjust the gamma settings on the card
tho, so CS is still a little dark. Ah well, better try
to find the instruction manual and rest of CDs (shed-load
of software comes with it !).

caLLous that compressed air stuff is what I'm after,
could you tell me where you get it ??

Cheers.

I got it from my local hardware store, but I'm pretty sure you could get it from somewhere like Halfords as well. :)

Whats that Card like?

I checked on ebuyer before for a GeForce 4, and that one come up, around £80, i am very interested in it, it may not be as powerful as a top of the range GeForce 3, but fuck me, for that Price its well worth it.

Send me feedback on your card pls

Well it's been in a week now.

To be honest based purely on 'feel' it's a little disapointing. Haven't run any proper benchmarks but I was looking for bigger gains in MOH and RTCW and even Q3 but the framerates don't seem to be much over the old TNT2 Ultra I was using.

I suspect this is because the rest of my system is ageing (Athlon 500, 128 Meg RAM) so badly. Am resigned to saving for new box and moving this card over to it.

Found a utility on the CD to alter the gamma settings at the click of button which is nice.

Haven't been through the rest of the software (comes with 'OEM' versions of Aquanox, No One Lives Forever, Sacrifice and some compilation bundle thing).

Tried overclocking it but it started to lock up on start-up so put it back. Still get some 'freezes' on start-up.

I'm going to try a bit more 'tweaking' this weekend.
Will post again if I find anything interesting.

Regards

Hooligun.

Hooligun, the problem is you have a card that can fly in a system than can't. Your next step should be to upgrade your CPU (and probably motherboard to support a new chip) and get some more memory in the meantime.

Thanks for the info.

I've quickly realised since installing the new card how antiquated the rest of my system is.

I'm looking for a new box (got monitors aplenty) but will have to wait till the summer as I'm gettin hitched (2nd time around + still paying for first one !) in June and it's eating all my cash every month.

I want to keep the old box intact as my son and I like to goof around 1v1 in CS, Q3 etc. Ultimately plan is for ADSL + a Router to get us both online at the same time.

I'll be back for more advice then no doubt.

Cheers.
