Can anyone out there who has one of them USB Infra red adapter thingumies tell me if it allows you to nominate which COM port it uses?

My boss has a Nokia 9210 Communicator, who's cable only works with a serial connection (COMs 1-4). He decided he'd go an buy a dinky Sony Vaio which is so dinky it has no serial port OR infra red. So I need to get a USB / infra red adapter (which can be used for other things) OR pay out silly amounts for USB to Serial converter cable.

I had a similar problem as I wanted to connect my dad's Palm M105 to his PC via IrDA, but as bids points out, the regular IrDA adaptors are expensive, cheapest I found was around £35.

Alternatively, Asus supply an IrDA header cable for their motherboards, plugs in directly and is only around £15, however, getting a supplier is difficult, Dabs have them listed but not in stock.

Ta. I went to that site and cos I still couldn't be 100% sure that I could asign it to a specific COM port, I found a USB to Serial converter.

I hope it does it's job properly. Thnx for that URL though. I had seen the same cable I just ordered from that site, on dabs for around a tenner more and it was out of stock for the next 20 days.

Thnx. :)
