I just finished reading Point Of Impact by Stephen Hunter, best book I've read for a while.

(It's not as fantasy or sci-fi book though, I'm not 17 :p )

(I know this is going to irritate you ;) )

Read some proper SF - Alastair Reynolds. That is all.

If you liked Reynolds (am up to date with his stuff too) try The Hyperion Omnibus from Dan Simmons. Pretty damn good books. The follow-up Endymion is good too; just don't touch his futuristic Greek Gods stuff, I thought they were awful.

On a Fantasy front, a recent good read (2nd book in the to-do pile) was The Lies of Locke Lamora - good story about a bunch of theives looking out for each other but generally trying to screw everyone else.

Other authors where I reckon I've read all (or maybe most) of their stuff:

Robert Rankin - Funny as fuck. Books based mostly around the suburb of Brentford (I've never been there myself but I've heard it's a nice place).
Tom Holt - Again amusing real world fantasy.
Gemmell - RIP :( As said above - classic ripping yarns and disembowlment.
Feist - Magician is still a stand out genre classic - shame all his recent stuff is formulaic wank.
Hobb - You can tell Robin's a chick from the character development stuff but the Assassin books are very good.
Banks - Sci-fi awesomeness.
Martin - Fantasy on a grand scale - he doesn't like his protagonists much and they don't often last too long :)
Howard - The Conan books are short and brutal - great reading.

George RR Martin - fantasyesque set with horses, swords, strange beings. Damn good story and sub plots though imo.
And I recently read Dragon and the Unicorn by A. A. Attanasio. It's an alternative take on the Arthurian legend(s) and the language is nice imo. I'll be getting more of the series.

Oooh - Nealy finished The Prefect. Don't think there's anythng left to read now.

Just finished it myself. Excellent. His latest one is "House of Suns", which isn't set in Revelation Space. Only in hardback at the mo.

As for Dan Simmons, yeah, read the Hyperion Omnibus last year; takes a bit of getting into but I did enjoy it. I'd also add Charles Stross to the list, does proper hard SF but also more quirky stuff, Halting State is very good, could almost have been written for the FH audience, and particularly those north of the border :)

Don't buy hardbacks myself. I'll keep an eye out.

I've read them they are good, though not a patch on the Patrick O'Brian novels. If you like Hornblower and Sharpe, read Patrick OBrian. And prepare to be impressed!

Only Forward - by Michael Marshall Smith

Amazon.co.uk: Only Forward: Michael Marshall Smith: Books

It is utterly fuckign brilliant. Totally mad, crazy ideas, odd plot, but instantly readable and one of those books you will not put down.

I have all his stuff. I'm amazed none of it is on celluloid tbh.
I thought Spares was better, but both are top stuff. Also, Spares was going to be made in to a film, but around the time it was being planned The Island comes out and screws up all those plans. It's a shame because Spares was great and The Island looks like total bollocks :/
