Ok, I don't play Quake 3 much, but I have played Quake 1 for roughly 3 years and Quake 2 just about 1. And from what I have experienced up until now on the servers out there. People have attained an incredibly annoying attitude.
Example: (nt: this is a fictional story, but it is often the crude reality on the servers)
I find myself a pretty good server, ping is good and no packets are reported missing.
Someone joins, and I'm like "woohoo, time for me to kick some serious azz".
The games starts, typically on T4, DM13 or T2 (I have no fav. map, I play what the other guy wants to play).
The match is on, we ping about the same. But still I remain with the upper hand since I always play from an internet-café that has a quite reasonable connection, and some pretty nifty machinery.
Lets say, the first ten points go to him. And then I start making a comeback. We exchange gunfire and he catches a well placed rocket in the shoes.
I stop a moment to exhale, and notice there's a little blue picture above his head with a smiley on it.
A sentence like "Fucking Lucky Ass Bitch (FLAB)" is suddenly smacked across the screen. And my joy quickly turns into hate.
After a little while of playing him, I end up getting in the lead with something like 14 - 13. Then suddenly, out of nowhere there's either "Sorry, my bro' is downing goat p0rn.. I have to go", "you suck!" or just "laaaag!!!!!!", and he disconnects. (Eventhough he have had a ping like my own all during the game. (I normally ping 5-10 on Danish servers)).
I run to mIRC to see if I can find him, but I notice nobody who is named "KiLLaHSm00Fr0MMarZ", strangely enough, cause why in Gods holy name would anyone on a Quake 3 server be using an alias to cover up his real identity?
If you ask me , the Quake 3 scene is one of the worst scenes I have seen when it comes to good sportsmanship.
I mean, of course there are some that can kick a nut off my sack at anytime, and be great blokes to chat with. But the ones who fake for reasons such as protecting their clan names. I can't really say I have any respect for them.
The faking part started in the later part of the now more or less deceased Quake 1 scene, and quickly moved on to Quake 2 since a lot of the old QW players moved along to try something new.
Quake 3 is the result of years of faking, bitching, whining, moaning and complaining.. and the ones doing it makes the game so much less attractive to the newcomers of ID's products.
If you swallowed a chunk of your neck reading this, please uninstall Quake 3 and send me your CD.
