Hail fellow inhabitants of Hibernia. My name is that of the legendry Elf, Legolas.

I shall serve Hibernia and it’s people from the goodness of my heart and the bravery of my spirit. Yet I have entered this world alone, knowing no one but the reflection of my image in the running of the streams that feed this beautiful land. I require nothing but the simple respect that any free man deserves. Nevertheless, I have ventured to other lands in my past and have granted me the experience that I desired.

I call out to all the Elves, Sylvans, Celts, Firbolg and the Lurikeen for help. As I am new to these lands I need guidance on where is safe to tread, where I can trade for such handsome weaponry that will serve me in my years to come and for armour to protect me through the thickness of evil. Where can I find the help of others, and the need for fellow hunters that seek the treasure of quests for those adventures with the mind of heart to accomplish such tasks.

I am young yet very wise. Thus I do understand life itself, but only life itself does not understand me. Where does life intend me to go? What does life intends me to be?

… In English

Hi! I’m going to be new to this game, with little knowledge of the game itself but enough to know what’s going on and what the idea behind the game is. The reason why I’m not playing this very minute is because I’m waiting for my new PC to arrive, then I will logg on.

I’m a keen experienced player of Internet gaming; I played Asheron’s Call for two years of my young life and enjoyed everyday of it. I also play CS, and thrive off the action. But Daoc has been burdening my mind for some months now, and I think it is time now to play.

I know little about character creation and the careers and skills, but I have been playing around with the Character Builder program that is found at http://daoc.catacombs.com/cbuilder15.cfm and I am certain to play the role of the Elf race, no question about it. I have no reason to change my mind, I’m an Elf at heart and shall play one… and because of the absolutely fabulous film ‘The Lord of the Rings’ It has forced the role of an Elf Archer into my skull.

I am going to be an Elf Archer but no idea what skills I should have, and what to be aiming to have. Could someone explain what advantages of playing an Elf has and the advantages and disadvantages of playing an Archer has? What the skills have to offer, such as melee and magic’s.

I will thank any help that will be given and shall be looking forward to the day that I will be hunting along side you.

Thank You.

Legolas. (aka Matt.)

Lots of people will tell you not to play an elf ranger (archer) as they get a slight disadvantage on stats at the start. imo though its not as bad as people make out & you seem to want to play elf so you should go for it. Rangers are tough to level though & you should expect to solo alot as rangers dont offer as much to a group as other classes & people have this idea of a perfect group which makes it tough on the archers of hibernia.

My first character was an elf ranger which i had to reroll at level 15 as i didnt know to spec bow (am i admitting this?) I levelled a warden to 45 now but i have gone back to my ranger & i do find it fun with my new spec. only level 18 and ill never have the time to solo to 50. I did however have this spec planned if any rangers could comment out there i would appreciate it.

Stealth 23
Blades 22
Path 48
Bow 45
Celtic Dual 21.

No idea how this spec would work out so any comments would be appreciated. (apologies for hijacking ur thread a bit there).

Last thing is to say good luck i hope you enjoy your stay in Hibernia.

... could you explain some things for me if you have the time:

What does Path do?
What does Celtic Dual do?
Blades? Im guessing is the melee type of weaponary.
Stealth.... Is this when you can turn invisable so that enimies can not see you in RvR???

Thnx.

Stealth - higher ratings means its harder to detect you
Blades - raises your melee damage/lets you access better styles
Path - the ranger 'spell' line which are a list of self buffs
Celtic dual - raise the chance of you swinging your off hand weapon and gives you access to worthless styles.

You are going to be really disappointed if you reckon elf rangers will be anywhere near as cool as legolas is - he simply owns. Rangers own but in a much lesser extent :(

Why? Well I've yet to see one sliding down the stairs of amg on a shield, one shoting the alb zerg or shoot albs in the eye then wrapping his hand round neck of a horse then flipping himself on to carry on shooting ;)

Welcome to Excalibur DAoC,

Most players in-game are willing to give advice at any time, certainly most rangers are.
Enjoy the game ;)

:)

Thank you people, but I hope you don't mind me asking what a Bard is?

Im new to all these technical wording, so please go easy on me :)

Thank You CENSIMILIA for your generosity, looking forward to talking about your adventures and advice you will land upon me.

HeHe... STORMRIDER, Im sure I will never live the same life as Legolas. He is a class of his own, but all I want is a chance of playing an Elf of the same skill of archery. Most likely it will never happen, but can't a man dream?!?! :)

LOTR has proberly set my hopes to high up, but Im sure I will enjoy every day of my new adventure. So LOFFF I will cry along side you, but my tears will be for happiness and enjoyment. :)

Hail FAELDAWN. Your welcome is that of a warming feeling, I hope this feeling stays with me and I feel I am gaining friends already. Thank You, all of you!

Legolas.

welcome to daoc :) and yes, dont expect to come sliding down amg on a shield pwning every1 :) but ranger class is fun and frustrating to play.
i would advice u to have a sopport class beside u ranger tho :/ cause u will spend most u time soloing on the ranger, and it's nice to have a bard/warden/druid to play if u get bored etc.

feel free to msg me ingame, and i'll set u up with some starting bows, tips :)

You can dream mate but warning in advance your ranger will most likely miss/fumble a lot.

As for bards they are all singing and dancing characters (literally) that are welcome in every group, whereas rangers are not so welcome. The life of a ranger is hard and lonesome so you must think long and hard whether that is the life for you.

Hi, welcome to Hib

If you play elf ranger, train in blades and leave piercing alone. It's a good idea to keep recurve bow equal to or nearly equal to your level, especially as you may end up soloing more than other classes. Personally I have kept bow equal to my level, with all other poitns going almost equally into Piercing (im a lurikeen ranger) and Path Finding. I'll put some into stealth and celtic dual eventually, but not until nearer level 50.
If you are prepared to make the effort, visit Tir Na Nog and go see the fletcher trainer and take up the craft. If you make your own arrows and bows, you will find it makes a big difference in your soloing ability (bows you buy from merchants will be 85% quality iirc, while you can make upto 100% quality ones with enough skill in the trade and these %'s multiply into your damage output) ...... or just ask when in tir na nog if there is a fletcher online who can make them for you ;)

Rangers are a lot of fun to play, but as someone else suggested, it might be an idea to make a bard, for example, too. Bards main roles are heal the tanks, play songs which regenerate endurance/mana/health and mezmerise mobs/albs/mids. They are welcome in any group, often get invited into groups with people higher than them (hence getting better xp, usually) and 'can' be a lot of fun to play, especially when you've been totally unsucessful getting a group for your ranger ;)

Feel free to /send Zenich or Dexst in game

You need to know three things before you begin.

Firstly, Elves in DAOC make very mediocre fighters. They can become Champions and Rangers, but they aren't as tough and strong as Celts, and they aren't as fast as Lurikeens. They are really meant to become magic users.

Secondly, the different classes that you can become in this game can be divided into four basic groups, known commonly as Tanks, Nukers, Healers and Rogues. Tanks are the heavy hitters that take the brunt of the fighting: Champion, Blademaster and Hero. Nukers are the magic users that cast devastating spells against the enemy, while being protected by the Tanks: Eldritch, Enchanter and Mentalist. Healers are the support classes that stay behind and keep everyone alive and fighting: Druid, Bard and Warden. Finally you have the Rogue class: Ranger and Nightshade. Rogues can deal out a lot of damage quickly but they are lightly armoured and best suited for a "hit and run" style of fighting.

In DAoC, you gain levels and become stronger by fighting monsters, and if you join a group of other players and fight them together, you gain much more experience more quickly than if you just go out on your own and fight them one by one. To be successful a group needs a good balance of Tanks to fight, Nukers to kill powerful monsters quickly while the Tanks engage them, and Healers to keep everybody moving. Rogues don't really bring anything to the group, and usually have a hard time finding an invitation to join. If they can't get in a group, they've got to go it alone, and that takes longer. MUCH longer.

Finally, some words about the Ranger. When DAOC first started, archer classes were widely considered to be the most powerful in the game. They could run around the frontier invisibly, sneaking up on enemies, kill them quickly with devastating bow damage, and then run away, invisible. In response to player complaints, the class was adjusted in successive patches that made archers miss and fumble more, do less damage with their bows, reduced the effectiveness of their stealth skill (assassin classes were given abilities to be able to see archers even when stealthed and kill them easily), and reduced (in the case of Rangers) the power of their Pathfinding spells... in short the class was "adjusted" so vigorously that archers are now among the weaker classes in the game - weak against enemy attack and limited in the damage they can deal out.

So what does this all mean? Simply this: choosing elf ranger in this game is choosing a very hard road. You're inherently limited from the very beginning, you'll be somewhat unwanted by your realm mates, and when you finally struggle up to higher level, you'll be a prime target for the enemy. It's not impossible by any means: there are a dozen or so level 50 elf rangers in Hib/Excalibur at the moment, myself included. And even after almost a year in the game I still have fun playing my elf. But you should go into it with your eyes open: as a fighter, in this game, you'll be something closer to Samwise Gangee than Legolas Greenleaf, but not as popular. :p

Pah never seen me at the amg then have you (for the benefit of legolas thats Alb MileGate - a big wall we built to stop ppl coming
into our realm...works too...erm...honest....)!!

Contrary to popular belief you CAN 1 shot kill people as a ranger - just they have to be either a lower con or a mage without a bladeturn up for some reason. It's not commonplace but it does happen.

My L50 spec as an elf ranger is as follows (btw before you accuse me of jumping on the LOTR bandwagon i was an elf and thouroughly gimped long before the first film :p)

42+9 bow
35+10 Pierce
36 Path
19+5 Celtic Dual
34+11 Stealth

Incidentally i'm rather pissed off i'm not on that list - 'cause i was (note the was) unguilded the stats seemes to ignore me. Accordign to duskwave i dont exist :/ Let the gimp comments flow :p

gimp.

seriously though, rangers are excellent fun and do the best non magic ranged damage (kinda obvious that). a point to remember, where so many rangers cock up is, you dont need stealth to xp, thats wasted spec points. celtic dual ive always thought is a waste for ranger, as you have high dex (so pierce and shield should give you enough defence) and by the time a mob reaches you, its dead if not dead already.

well good luck (and yes i stopped my ranger at 41 when it got to the point of ..need bard..oh you are a ranger, no go away you ranger you..)

!

Thank you all for your individual advice, and so far I have gathered...

- Elf's are of the magic race, not as fast as the Lurk' or as strong as the Borg's?
- Rangers have been nerfed
- Going to expect to see myself solo'ing alot
- Nobody likes an archer
- Archers rule in RvR?!
- Bard's are good.... (but I want to play a combat role with range!!!)
- Everyone says Rangers Sux
- That I should not watch another LOTR film or repeats
- Choose a new name for my character!

:)

Thank You all Again! You have been of great help.

Er, no. They used to, but they were nerfed. In some situations they can be quite effective, notably keep raids/defense, but on the whole they are among the weaker RvR classes right now.

Supposedly the developers at Mythic are currently looking for ways to strengthen the archer class in RvR a bit, but nothing has officially been announced.
