I've seen plenty of optical illusions, but this one freaks me out, the green table
is just the red one rotated 90 degrees, measure it!

no it isnt

The green is 5cm and the red rotated is 4.5

How did it mutate into a greenish colour and suddenly become of a different shape then? If its the same i mean.

Measure down the middle as best you can with the perspective and then compare the length of the green with the width of the red...holy fuck!

Yeah it is the same just it has been squeezed in a bit. But it is still green. I dont buy it.

The what now? :eek7:

Are they suppose to be the same table,or some length as long, or some?

Ah right, after some measuring with ze tools, i see it :p

from the bbc site

The one of the left seems a lot longer and thinner than the one on the right. What if I tell you that the the red table is simply the green table on its side, in other words that the dimensions of the two table tops is identical.

But they arent though, the green table is 0.5cm longer than the red

Measured it myself, identical if you move with the perspective, not direct lines.

Then again seems that palcement of measure means all too.

Perhaps my ruler is broken but those red lines arent the same

Ofcourse not, you're measuring the one one the left at an angle.

So on the left the measure goes(when perspective not taken into account) from right side to left side, while on the right the measure stays centered.

I saw the pic :p

Like i said, those aren't same measures.

You're measuring the one on the left at an angle, while measuring the one on right straight.

Even so, the measuring isn't accurate from that perspective in any case.

on the left the line isnt at the right angle so if you do it at the correct angle its even longer

Yeah you're right that if measured from the pic with a regular ruler, the lines don't match, but that's perspective for ya :p

So its a load of bollocks then

Nah, i just think that the perspective creates the fault in the measuring. Kinda like trying to measure the width of a boat from a fisheye lens, while the other boat is at a 90 degree angle.

The illusion is true enough so to speak.

no it isnt though, even if you measure the lines they tell you to its wrong, measure from length to length at the correct angle its still wrong

And like i said, i think that error in length is due to perspective. Which is kinda the point.

The error is minimal though, even IF it was accurate.

no the point is its suppose to be exactly the same but turned at a right angle, which it isnt. So it isnt an illusion

But do you get that the table on the right isn't affected by perpective when measured so the measurements would never be the same in any case.

Not to mention there's fov issues etc :p

Right then , measure the bottom edge of the green table and then compare it
with the side edge of the red, your eyes are telling you the green table is narrower, but they are exactly the same....an illusion is born.

They really should've just posted a top-down image to avoid all this, 'cause i'm sure the measurements are quite the same :p

Yeah you're right that if measured from the pic with a regular ruler, the lines don't match, but that's perspective for ya :p

measure the lines based on the tiles on the floor, thus removing any deviation from 'perspective' (not that it matters they are on the same angle) :p
red is approximately 3.5x3.5
green is approximately 2.5x5

They still don't match

Quite right you are.

Except on the part about being on the same angle for measure ;)

Then again i'm not going to mention the obvious that if they were thr same length, the green table would look shorter, not longer, then the red one.

And then again there could be several tricks to make therm seem at the same level, while giving off the illusion of being a different size, to confuse people just like this thread, while they actually were the same size :p
