Well, over the past week or so, i have been jotting down dates/times on what i think this "Click of Death" is occuring on my Hard Drive.

Its a "40gb IBM Deskstar IC35L040AVVA07-0" Hard Drive anyway... here are the dates and times...

00:48 01/02/03
00:04 03/02/03
00:04 04/02/02
23:59 05/02/02
00:12 07/02/02
00:19 09/02/02
00:02 10/02/02
20:25 11/02/02
20:28 13/02/02

On the 11th, i did a Thorough Scandisk, so maybe that is why it moved forward a few hours beeping.

I did that Drive Test a while ago, and i think i will do it tomorrow too... but what if it says the Hard Drive is fine? When it doesnt seem like it is?

If you have clicking at all, its time to backup and start shopping for a new HDD.

Well ive had clicking for about 2/3 months... but i started to get worried when that post was in the General forum...

I dont have money at all... so i cant really get a new Hard Drive if this one fucks up anytime soon.. :(

Weird, I had the click of death on one of my pc's, so I swapped the hard drive. Some months later I remembered some info that was on the old drive and dug it out and installed it as a slave on another system, and guess what? No click, it's been running fine for 3 months now.

D'y'think it's because it's no longer accessing the damaged sectors?

Back it up now and exchange it under warranty.

I bought this Hard Drive from the Manchester fair tho.. about i dunno 5months ago...

Does that actually matter? Will IBM still exchange it? Coz... i actually think the guarantee will have run out for the company i bought it off...

My 75GXP is running fine 12 months after making the clicking noise of death. The IBM Disk Recovery program actually works.

Did you get it from bowlers SG?

No matter what it says on the ticket, you still have statutory rights

ibm Defect Support - Hardware 0870-550-0900

alos, if you have it, use the S.M.A.R.T. technology on your mobo, it warns you when your drive is going to fail.

My IBM just gave me a scare.

It totally bodged in big stylee, crashed me puter and wouldn't detect it on boot up. I thought that it had exploded so fiddled around with it a bit and ordered a new one.

Then I decided to fiddle some more and discovered that it would work when I turned it upside down :/ So it's now sitting in my case upside down chugging away quite happily.

My PC is so fuckin weird.

Bah I've given up on it. Seems to crash randomly then if I pull it out and give it a shake it'll work again for a few more hours.

Just out of warranty too, IBM timed that well ;(

Hi .Cask

You might want to try and get in touch with IBM and explain the situation to them. You never know, they may replace the drive if it'll keep you happy. Even if they don't, you won't have lost anything by trying.

Kind Regards

I got 2 of those in my box they both been running for over a year and no problem what so ever.
They are both cooled a few friends have the same drives and all those i know off that failed with them where not cooled, so far i have never heard of any drive failing while cooled so i am putting it down to overheating, could be wrong tho

I've had 3 maxtor ata133 120gb drives and 1 maxtor 200gb ata 100 drive fail in the last 4 months, 2 of them I heard a loud "clink" noise and then bye bye drive.
No, they havent overheated, no I dont move the PC's, yes they're on all the time.
I wont be buying maxtor again, they're shit
Of course, I've also had a shedload of IBM drives fail too over the years, so I'm kinda running out of options. Any suggestions?

I very much agree, Western Digital rock. That said, I have had Maxtor drives in the past and they've been fine, but then again I don't run mine under the same strain as Ted's are/were under. Just on a side note, it seems Maxtor have just launched the world's first 300Gb hard drive

Kind Regards

I've got the 120gb myself & I've found it to be a sturdy little number. Now of course I read this & have become paranoid that my e-mail archives (far too much shite to lose) will get nuked if I don't back them up.

My box very rarely hits the HDD though, its setup so that it loads everything I generally use on boot & then does pretty much FA else.
