In your opinion which games do you feel have been criminally ignored by the gaming public, and which games do you feel should have been ignored completely for their crapness but sold bucketloads?

Any game with a Star Wars license has been utter shit, and shouldn't sell.

Games that have been passed over... I can't really think of many, but Deus Ex is still underrated in the public eye, despite it being the greatest single player game ever. Without doubt.

deus ex never really caught the average gaming publics attention, it kinda appealed to the people who appreciate good games, and DONT buy every fifa and tomb raider game.

Super Star Wars on the snes was good, Rogue Leader on the Gamecube looks brilliant and has had some rave reviews.

Although Jedi Knight 2 is fucking awful :/

Most under rated game, in Europe and the USA at least, is the Virtua Fighter series. It's been totally over shadowed by Tekken.

System Shock 2, never caught on yet its one of the best games I have ever played, next to Half-Life :)

Harpoon and its successor Harpoon2, both brilliant tactical games based on accurate weaponry and superb simulations of modern naval warfare. Loved by wargame fans everywhere but never really sold a lot.

Black and White was hyped as a "new genre" of game, whereas it was little more than another god/RTS. Spanky graphics claimed to be way ahead weren't, depth of play wasn't, extensive testing never happened and it was full of bugs. A nice game gone bad and I wish I'd never succumbed to the hype and got it.

Daikatana sold quite a bit more than it should have, terrible game that was.

You obviously missed Lucasarts' heyday with the SW licence then. X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and X-Wing vs Tie-fighter (IIRC, and rather imaginative titles they were too) were the dbs about 7-8 years ago.

I still have all 3 on CD floating about here somewhere.

Think I'll go install Q3 on my brand spanking new laptop for a laugh, see what my framerate is :p

All Capcom 2D fighters are ignored by the 'general public' even though they are > all. Everyone buys Tekken :(

Agreed in the most part...

There were some good Star Wars games, Dark Forces was great, as was Tie Fighter and X-Wing....

JK2 isnt amazing, but the SP is decent, and the MP is fun as long as its sabers only. I've been playing quite a lot of MP, its definately good fun.

JK2 is at least better than most of the tripe that comes out....

Virtua Fighter is definately underrated, mostly due to the "casual gamers" who buy the PSX etc. and arent very clued up on games. Tekken is ideal for those idiots... Hence why it sells loads...

People cant grasp the skill in VF so they just button bash/do same move over and over in Tekken......

Hopefully VF4 will change that.

Capcom 2d fighters are my most played games, as well as older square stuff (Chrono trigger, final fantasy 6 etc.). Both the vs series and alpha series are superb, yet as you say ignored in the uk :/

DF was quite good imo. The only thing that struck me as funny was the way the stormtrooper's assault rifle fired randomly in a non-random fashion.

SWAT 3 is also ignored. Rainbow Six and all that tosh is more popular :) SWAT is better though

Harpoon was always in the genre of strategy wargames, like Steel Panthers, etc, but the semi-realtime element made it more exciting, it was actually closer to the RTS games like Dune2 and C&C which came much later.

Harpoon2 was much better, more accurate and with realistic communications, in the advanced mode you actually lost contact with units occasionally, especially with subs. The graphics were cool but the program appeared as DOS games started moving from Extended to Expanded memory and it suffered from severe memory errors. TBH the game was way ahead of its time and it would be so nice to have an updated version for Windows.

Harpoon4 is on the cards, however it's been in some sort of Limbo since late 2000, currently scheduled for Summer 2002, the game has been passed around distributers since.

The original Harpoon I happily spent all day playing, even Civilization doesn't compare to some of the marathon games I played on it. I wish I could get hold of a Harpoon2 Admiral's Edition CD and try and get it running again ...

Some seriously ignored games...

Homeworld - this really deserved to be much bigger than it was, superb game, scorching multiplayer, so much potential too.

Ground Control - very similar to Homeworld in a lot of ways, biggest strength was the multiplayer, lovely game but like Homeworld, not easy by any means.

Myth/Myth2/Myth3 - very very good games, fantastic storylines, told with real atmosphere, especially the 1st and 3rd ones. And *again* multiplayer to die for, truly challenging and fun. Shame Myth2's mix of sprites & 3d didn't work properly on nVidia cards but all fixed with Myth3 :) (and NO I'm not talking about those lame picture-based "adventure" Myst games which people always confuse over).

The reason those 3 were all a bit ignored was their difficulty I reckon, they all take some time to learn, very hard to master. Shame since they've all got some of the best multiplayer capabilities of any game I've ever played.
