I am going to delve into the world of game development as i have always wondered how it all stitches together and works. Now i have some free time i want to have a dabble

So heres your virtual drawing board, if you could have a game in your mind realised what would it be?
No pornography or laddey's mum please

Completely blank slate just to see what kind of things the average forum trolling joe would like

Argh, too many options!

I guess my dream game would involve something combining my top three, which are;

1) Baldurs Gate 2 (obviously) - The story and script are by far the best in any game I've ever played. I love the whole micro-management side of it, and the RPG progression. The graphics from the Infinity engine are somewhat dated, but fitted the game perfectly. I think my game would have a top down isometric view like Baldurs Gate.

Elements taken; Isometric viewpoint | Huge Story | Brilliantly written Script | Certain amount of micro-management, but nowhere near RTS amounts

2) Final Fantasy VII - Another brilliant story, Materia as way of ability and the fact it levels up with you is a great system.
A very atmospheric game imho, you feel empathy for all the characters and their plight. Plus Cloud is badass and has a massive sword.
Turn based combat can be frustrating, and the random battles a tad weary if your just trying to get somewhere fast. It's hard to say what I love so much about this game, but I just do.

Elements taken; Equipable Ability 'tokens' that level up with you | Loosely turn based combat | Character Empathy

3) Diablo 2 - Hah, another isometric game (Im a sucker for old gfx :p).
Diablo 2 is probably the most addictive game I've played. The eternal quest for a level up, a ultra-unique drop, whatever. The itemisation was top-notch in this game. LOD added runewords which was great and added even more options. Levelling up was fun, their are even ladders adding the the competitive side of getting to level 99 first. One could argue that drop rates for the best items were waaaay too low, but I think they should be hard to obtain, just like the best items in all games.

Elements taken; Itemisation/Runewords | Feeling of 'uniqueness' to areas (shouldn't be exactly the same next time you play through the game) | Able to take your characters online and quest/fight.

So it's pretty obvious I love RPG's eh?

So the main points of my game;

- Isometric viewpoint (or at least, the option for an Isometric view).
- Huge Story - many options.
- Brilliantly written Script.
- Certain amount of micro-management, but nowhere near RTS amounts.
- Equipable Ability 'tokens' that level up with you.
- Loosely turn based combat .
- Itemisation/Runewords/very rare hard to obtain Equipment
- Feeling of 'uniqueness' to areas (shouldn't be exactly the same next time you play through the game)
- Able to take your characters online and quest/fight (option for creating online only characters- Diablo2 stylee).
- Unique look to all high-end equipment.
- Level-up system (similiar to DAoC's)
- Character Empathy

That's all I can think of at the moment. I'm sure I'll remember some more bits that my game needs.

I just hope Dragon Age lives up to hype :)

If you can make this game for me Chronic, I'll give rep :(

All this thread will do is make you realise that as a game developer you can't please everyone.

If I could have one game I would ask for Betryal at Krondor to be remade (exact same story and game play) but with up to date graphics.

I'd make a freddyshouse Mortal Combat style game, Shao Khans voice would be replaced by Deebs whilst Jupitus would be the little bloke that pops up and says "Toasty!" characters would include:

Cornokz
Laddey
Lamp
Megadave
BloodOmen
Chronictank
Ezteq
Cozak
Afran
Thorwyn
Shagrat
Sparx

------

Other than that i'd make a game that'd be a perfect conversion of real life, you can literally do ANYTHING you want with the same consequences of real life (yes you can get jailed for 10 real years in it if you're caught doing naughty things) it'd give people a virtual feel of what the darkside be like and such, it'd be win if made correctly!

------

Thats it really, I was going to suggest remaking Syndicate BUT they're already doing that (oh yes they are)

Rule No. 1 for gamedesigners:

NEVER ask the people what they want.
They never know what they want. They only know what they DON`T want.

diablo 2 with shiney new graphics and new dungeons / bosses.

Oh wait! If you only you had asked me a couple of years ago, you've missed your chance.

No, rule #1 is "Prepare to kill your baby" :D

You'll be hacking and slashing that lovely design of yours because of the F*CKING producers so many times that even the motherboard wouldn't love it anymore.

Muh that would be a hard one, could probably make a perfect game for each genre (for me of course), but if I was to refine games that already exist I'd want Goldeneye 64 with some tweaks (no auto lock-on, PC so mouse (duh), updated graphics). The Last Remnant as an MMO :D and a Final Fantasy that hasn't been as fail as the past 3-4

hmm now i was into making games YEARS back.. amstrad 464.. that long ago... and drew up what i thought would be uber

kinda based on the old Warhammer Realm of Chaos retinues system.. but guess its combining that with stuff from civilisation and heroes of might and magic..

you start of with your main char in a small village and a small band of followers.. exploring nearby can give either random fights, finds or new followers.. landmarks as well.. but they go down as being permanent for game.

further u push out from home.. more the risks but bigger rewards. cash can be used to equip army, train specialists, build up town etc..

more your band of fighters fight.. the more exp THEY get.. not just the main char.. and occasionally a new hero will rise from the ranks so effectively u got 2 chars then..

anyhoo.. i done some pen and paper tests using warhammer rules for combat, and it worked nicely, when i tried to do it on computer... the amount of variables sent me mad.. didnt have enough ram on that antique to make it work heh.

A good formula for any aspiring game maker is;

Fun > Controls > Gameplay > Graphics > Gimmicks = Good Game basis.

Depends what type of game you're after imo.

In a mmo game a good atmosphere "us vs. them" is really important.

In a single player game it's all about the story.
