Yo all

Right, basicaly they don't do ADSL / Cable in my area yet :(

So for me to have the joy's of a LPB i'm lookin to get ISDN.

So can you all please tell me the good / bad points about it:

How much it costs
Download speeds
Ping (Important)

I know its bad cause it uses dial up, and I would like the 24/7 you get with Cable / ADSL.

Also which company's do it, and were there any problems settin up, like BT being wankers like they normaly are.

Thanks a lot

Alex

Price:

either 20 summin a month with no calls, or 40 summin including £15 calls - basically you pay the same except the installation is cheeper with the latter. I spoke to someone at bt and they told me that house calls are included on this. - i cant temember the installation costs

Dl speeds:

on average, 7k a sec

pings:

60 usually - but fluctuations will make it go higher (as it will on most - see a barrys cs server when its real busy)

Its best to get a package for the dialup

Im on bt - gonna switch to the 24/7 option in jan if it goes ahead - thats £15 a month extra

Setup was fine for me - no delays or nuttin - it was in and runnin (and i was quaking) within an hour or so.

A decent TA (isdn modem thingy) will make you slightly faster - i just got the bt one - i swear cos i have this the cut offs on bt net dont work :D

the key point is that you will be locked into a 12 month contract - i'm out of mine atm, but it will still cost a bomb to convert the lines around if i wanted it uninstalled.

One reason i haven't switched to adsl is that they will charge me nuff :(

wanna know anything else?

As far as TA's are concered don't get a BT speedway card as they're possbily the worst TA's u can get :)

Go for an ASUS one, much quicker for pings and slighty faster for downloads. I think they're also cheaper than speedways.

The best TA I ever used was an Eicon. Brand new at around £45.00. /me thanks Trebz for the recommendation.

Now that I have aDSL I have no need for it, therefore it's for sale..:D 3 months old, hardly used. Still under warrenty, £25?

>How much it costs
Can't remember the signup and rental costs (depends which package you got for anyway - see http://www.bt.com/homehighway/), but running costs (ie call charges) are basically the same as telephone lines.

>Download speeds
around 7KB/sec on a good day (this is in single-bonded mode).

> Ping (Important)

Depends on ISP and TA (the ISDN equivilant of a modem), but typically pings are 40-100.

ISDN does have some of the problems that standard dialup has (ping spikes, dropped connects, etc), but compared to modems, these problems are very minor (you get your full 64/128kb almost all time, and 3 ping spikes in the same game is bad luck rather than routine). Going back to modem is torture.
