I've just reinstalled ICQ after a long time without it, and it's so.... shit? First thing I got was about 200 url's for "MY WEBCAM IM HORNY" blah blah, and six "Please use AOL" icons on my desktop. Great.

Turn up the security options. I don't get any of those spam emails, since only people on my contact list can message me, and I've disabled the emailexpress and pager.:D

To get rid of all the spam, go to main-> security & permission->permission lvl and set it to high. This means only people on your list can send u ICQ mesages, everything else is ignored.

A much better method of removing the spam is the run Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs ... well, you know the rest :)

ICQ has majorly sucked since AOL put out the latest version. I dont trust it any more.

Being a mook however, I do have Windows Messenger running, due to the general pain in the arse that is "all my friends use it and are scared of change"

Everyone has Windows Messanger running, you can't help it, it reinstalls itself in the startup whenever it updates itself (without asking) and automatically runs (and reinstalls) whenever you go to MSN or Hotmail.

It took me ages to disable the bloody thing, had to _completely_ deinstall it, now I'm afraid to download Windows Updates in case it comes back.

Media Player is another one, I had to revert to version 6 because the latest one checks for updates without asking and cannot be disabled, always wondered why my internet connection was running after my step-son had been playing CDs !

Isn't there an alternative to Messenger ? One that can read all the "universal" formats ? I don't use it myself but my step-son does and I'd dearly like to replace it.

Well I still like ICQ, not everyone I know uses quakenet, and I cba to chat on another network, and even then I still have people I know from ICQ that arent on IRC at all. I prefer IRC but I need ICQ as well, I dont use it much now, but its important for keeping in contact with people I dont see so often. With all the offline msgs and stuff its kinda like email, but better, I hate email. :)

yup, it's more or a "need" thing than a "want" thing. as much as we all hate it, it is useful and we all keep using it (apart from the ones that don't, but they either found an alternative, don't have any friends or are just strong of mind).

I've been using this Trillian for about a week, its really quite good, not perfect but good.

It has ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, IRC all built into one IM window :)

Msn is okay, but i've just uninstalled ICQ :( Nice to see how a perfectly decent app can be ruined in just a few months with AOL involvement.

MSN Messenger is a default install whenever you run Windows Update for Internet Explorer, if you do re-install or upgrade it it puts a program in your startup.

You can disable auto-startup in the Messenger options, but whenever it auto-updates itself, it re-enables auto-start, the only way to disable it completely is to remove from the startup, or de-install it and don't forget to deselect the option when you run another update.

Media Player has three options for auto-check; daily weekly and monthly, there is no never option, the auto-check will attempt to connect to the internet whenever it is invoked by running Media Player, if you have auto-connect on the dial-up, off it goes running up your phone bill.

Ta for trillian tho :)

ok. i read the news, i read the site that the news links to and i read the updates on the site that the news links to. where specifically does it say v4.6 is the worst affected version? if anything, on the main page, it simply says that the test was conducted on v4.6.0073:
Note: this has been tested on MSN Messenger (4.6.0073) for Win2k & Windows Messenger (4.6.0073) for WinXP (all with IE 6).
and also, on the first update, it even states that:
"Users of earlier versions of Messenger (e.g. 3.6) are at very high risk as it will give out email addresses to any website, not just ones with the correct suffix."
